Whiskey sours on his tongue as he swallows another mouthful, and he wonders if maybe this next one will be enough to numb him to the feeling of lightning crackling over his skin, the remembered sensation of shame chased by heady euphoria. Something like disgust tightens his jaw, an itch in his teeth that ache for a fight, for blood, for something to distract him from the fact that Nicky is staring at him like he wants to eat him alive and wouldn't care who watches.
Seth just wants to get drunk at Fox Tower's end-of-season rager, but Nicky's on a mission.

The Maserati’s engine growled beneath Nicky’s hands, the steering wheel vibrating faintly as if it could feel his nerves too. The car smelled like Andrew—faint smoke, leather, and the citrus cleaner Abby used sometimes when she came by to help tidy. Thinking about his cousin, who'd just lost his twin, made the ache sharper, not softer.
He kept his eyes forward, jaw tight, music turned down so low it was more like background static than a song. The silence pressed on him harder than the weight of the road. Every so often, he caught himself mouthing words, prayers maybe, or curses—he couldn’t tell the difference anymore.
From the passenger seat, his phone buzzed once. He ignored it.
His chest was tight. The image of Aaron’s face, pale and drawn, slotted into his mind, and he cursed out loud, pounding once against the steering wheel.
“Fuck!”
He told himself he wasn’t running away. Not exactly. He was—what? Taking a break. Getting air. Finding something sharp enough to distract him from the hollow pit chewing up his insides.

He thinks it all the time, every time he catches a glimpse of blond hair and those damn lip piercings that make him feel a little crazy. Hell, he shouts it, sometimes, yelling across the room at Seth when he says something particularly annoying or infuriating.
"I thought you didn't like me," Seth mutters against Nicky's lips, mouth quirked up in the infuriating grin that Nicky is so obsessed with. He pulls Seth back in with something close to a groan.
