Summary
Nagisa's life for the past three years has been a slow downward spiral. The only thing that soothes him is booze and fantasies of ripping Karma apart. But when he's suddenly put on leave and barred from participating in anymore assassinations per order of Karasuma, the spiral deepens. How was he supposed to avenge Korosensei if he couldn't kill?
The last thing Nagisa needs is Karma. Karma is evil walking. A traitor amongst his peers. Nagisa swears to put him down if he ever saw that bastard again.

Girls should be dropping like flies falling into her arms, and they do, but somehow that’s yielded zero girlfriends. But she was Ryo Yamada. Summary
Nagisa Shiota feels through hurting himself. Karma Akabane feels through hurting others. They're numb, so it's only natural for them to connect, as unhealthy as that friendship may turn out to be. Nagisa struggles to balance school, the weight of his mother's expectations and disappointment in him, and a job consisting of compensated dating (selling his body) so he can earn enough money to get out of that godforsaken house. Moreover, he's forced to compartmentalize his extreme mental illness, the trauma of losing his father, and dealing with his mother's grief of losing his father. Karma, on the other hand, attempts to suppress his attachment to the other, both unadjusted to and terrified of the idea of caring about another human being. With the constant need for violence and the persistent emptiness of his parents' absence, he fails to warm up to the vulnerable idea of mutual affection.
As the two scramble to hold each other together, Gakushuu Asano is separately cracking under the expectations of his many unwanted roles, as the principal's son, the head of the student council, and captain of the soccer team, and resorts to idiotic coping mechanisms and friendships that could ruin his social life if discovered.

Summary
Karma and Nagisa celebrate their third year anniversary by going to a café. If they were any other couple this would probably be fine. However, Karma needs to hide their relationship as he’s going for a promotion and being gay is a bit awkward in the Japanese government.
Unfortunately, Karma over supply of enemies (and lack of impulse control) means everything rapidly goes wrong.
Maybe Nagisa should have become an assassin after all.

“Jax?” She murmurs, not wanting her voice to carry to neighboring rooms. “Your door’s open. You alright?”
There’s no answer. Pomni’s mouth thins, and even as she knows he’d probably string her up by her hat for letting herself in, she gently pushes on the door. It swings inward with a creak that wouldn’t have been haunting had it not opened onto dead silent pitch blackness.

She hurriedly shakes the thought away. Besides, Jax is the furthest from insane or obsessed with finding an exit out of the whole cast. Just by virtue of his ability to play by the rules of the Circus, every one of them is more likely to lose their minds and fully abstract before he’d even be in danger of it (Plus, the room is dark and silent, no rampaging monster full of glowing eyes to be found).
He’s definitely still not responding to her calling out to him, though. Something is still off.
