Summary

Inside is a man with horrifying mutations, who insists that Earth disappeared decades ago, planets with oceans of blood are real, and something out there outside of time is watching him. When Grace encounters the thing during an investigation into the SM-13 and sees it too, the two are drawn together out of a desire to understand how Simon is here, and why he has survived.

Summary
Angels have blond hair. He never knew that. Or that they had hair at all. Maybe they don't—
— are the first thoughts that come to him when he was able to have thoughts again.
The creature above him is bathed in light, blinding and brilliant. The light smears the outline of its head into a pale golden blur.
The angel is speaking to him, he thinks. The thought is so absurd, Simon can only lay there and stare. He's vaguely aware of other noises around him - footsteps, the shuffling of a busy room and strange discordant melodies that sound like wind chimes shaking in the wind, overlain with a strangely human voice. Must be the angel.
The angel shifts above him and Simon notices a splotch of red close to it's head.
He frowns, tries to lift a hand and when that fails, he tries to speak. He has to warn the angel that there's blood on its halo. Simon hasn't believed in anything in a long time but in his delirium, can't resist the burning urge to correct this wrong. Angels shouldn't have blood on them, especially if it came from him.

“Rocky, stay here” Grace whispered, moving closer to Simon as he tried not to step into any of the pools of blood. Rocky stopped, seemingly understanding the gravity of the situation, which Grace was thankful for. He didn’t have to be next to Simon to notice he was crying, full on sobbing, his shoulders shaking as he stared down at his hand. It was covered in blood. Grace swallowed hard but kept moving, one step at a time, noticing what looked like an alien knife just a few centimeters away from Simon.
He didn’t have to be a genius to put two and two together.
The problem now was… was he in danger?
“Simon?”

Simon kills some aliens that invade the dome in Erid, and it brings back some dreaded memories of things he hasn't told Ryland.

When sleep did come it didn't stick for long. Really, all it seemed good for was making the line between dreams and the impossible reality he was living more difficult to draw. He hadn't quite been able to shake the feeling that he was just... flashing in between some kind of purgatory and paradise, torn between the two with violent yanks and hooked grips. Could it really be fully considered a paradise when he still had marred and inhuman skin and insides from everything that had happened in that stupid blood ocean? When he could still sense the thrum of it, the feeling, warm and alive around and on top of and inside of him. When his dreams consisted of sightless eyes digging into swells of dirt, rough protrusions that cut odd lines through his perception.
He dreamt of vivid red and iron, the smell and taste of it so ingrained into who he was that he couldn't imagine a time when he hadn't known.
'Dreams', he called them. As if it were that easy to separate his reality from whatever this was.

Grace plops back on his chair with a huff. He examines his own sleeve with what Simon can only call fondness. “Yeah. I love them.” Simon doesn’t know how to handle such a delicate sight, so he hums in what he hopes sounds like appreciation. “What about you, Simon? Do you have a favourite animal?”
Simon doesn’t need to think about it. “Rats.”
“Rats?” Grace echoes back.
“They’re resilient.”
Grace does his own hum of appreciation back at Simon. Grace meets his eyes. “They are. Very much so.”

After making sure he doesn't die, Grace can’t help his scientific curiosity concerning the new set of teeth growing out Simon’s face. Desperately trying not to come off as a distrustful weirdo, he eventually makes a deal with Simon: he won’t bother him about his mutation unless the other explicitly says he’s okay with it.
Besides, they do still have to… save the universe and everything.
(or, 5 times Grace is curious about the man in front of him and the 1 time Simon indulges him)

Crazy that author hasn't seen iron lung and yet. convinced me!!also a fan of this interpretation of their tech disparities; Simon being used to a /future/ level of tech, more advanced/different somehow from Grace’s— as the implication is of Simon being from a parallel future.. it makes sense. I've just grown so used to the “they don't got shit in Eden” interpretation.

Once he had known the curve of her smile, the scent of her perfume in the air, her hair in his hands; now, he can only distantly recall how she looked.

The first thing Simon Fischer learned about saving humanity was that no one asked whether he wanted the job. They simply informed him he was the only engineer qualified to keep the Mary alive. Every propulsion system, environmental control, fabrication unit, air recycler, or electrical failure would be catastrophic. If something broke millions of miles from Earth, there would be no repair crew to call, no replacement parts waiting in a warehouse, and definitely no second chances. There would only be Simon.
He'd argued, refused, and even pointed out there had to be someone else. There wasn't. The sun was dimming, and every calculation ended the same way: someone had to go. So Simon went.
He hadn't expected to become humanity's last engineer, and he certainly hadn't expected to become friends with a mysterious scientist welded into a submarine.
