Dazai and Chuuya are getting married in two weeks and wedding planning is going crazy. As Dazai's best man, Ranpo is somewhat required to at least try and be involved in this wedding. That means he does, in fact, have to attend the joint bachelor party.
It's such a shame he doesn't enjoy parties that much. They're crowded and drunk people are loud and crazy. The food is alright but the socializing is exhausting. Oh yeah, and Yosano keeps trying to get him to meet this man she SWEARS he's gonna like.

Ranpo spends his whole life feeling out of place and misunderstood. He struggles to feel like he belongs until one awkward tall man stumbles into his life and changes it forever. It would be perfect if the man wasn't stuck in a cycle of perpetual self-loathing and therefor otherwise incapable of acknowledging any strong emotion. Ranpo is really screwed. He shouldn't have fallen for such a ridiculous person. It's okay though because Ranpo is the world's greatest detective and getting Edgar Allan Poe to admit he's worthy of love should be child's play. Shouldn't it?

Ranpo's strategic flirting in an attempt to get the oblivious and paranoid Edgar Allan Poe to both trust him and admit his feelings.

“No! This oaf couldn’t last a round with me even if he wanted to.”
Not in front of the children, Shadow, Kojiro had been about to say, but the words die in his throat. Instead he turns to Kaoru slowly, fuming.
“Excuse me? What’s that supposed to mean, cinnamon stick?”
“It means you couldn’t handle me in bed,” Kaoru answers. He looks down his sharp slash of a nose at Kojiro, somehow, despite Kojiro’s height advantage.
“Well, maybe you couldn’t handle me!” Kojiro snaps.
“Doubtful,” Kaoru scoffs. He’s close now, close enough for Kojiro to see the angry line between his eyebrows, the irritated curl of his upper lip.
“Prove it!” Kojiro yells, stepping closer.
“Maybe I will.”
And then they find out. That's it :)

The thing about emotional consequences is that they have all of the gut-punch, full body aching of a physical consequence. They are all-encompassing, overwhelming, terrible, and completely inescapable.
In this case, Kojiro could have easily avoided the emotional consequences to his actions if he had just tried.
But he hadn’t—because Nanjo Kojiro is nothing if not a complete fucking idiot. And it was no one’s fault but his own that he had agreed to hook up with his best friend.

Kaoru comes up with the great, great idea to become friends with benefits. Kojiro listens to him. Now why did you go and do that, Kojiro?

However unfathomable and thus intriguing they might seem, Edgar loved Ranpo's eyes the best - which was a little ironic since Ranpo rarely showed them either, and during the scarce moments when he did, they were often behind a pair of glasses. Even so, Edgar could always remember those emerald orbs, always so analytical and serious, but also capable of versatile expressions and emotions. Edgar was proficient at reading eyes since he was young, as it was basically a required skill growing up, and every time Ranpo looked at him with even the slightest bit of warmth, Edgar would feel as if he'd been fueled by endless energy and given the entire universe.

So happily ever after, right? At least, if survival and paperwork counted as happy. Then what was this shit?! Being in some rip-off 'Honey I shrunk the Cultivator' fanfiction wasn't part of the deal!
In other words, Shang Qinghua, the great master Airplane Shooting Into the Sky, overworked and underappreciated god of this universe, accidentally accepts an optional quest with no cancel option and ends up even shorter than usual. Wasn't his life dangerous enough as it was?
