For a moment, Ed just frowns, but then he tips his head in an acquiescing nod that brings his forehead softly into Stede’s.
“You can fish off the boat,” Stede says. “We can figure something out. I don’t know who I am, either. We’re both changing a lot, Ed. I’d like to find out who we’re becoming.” He hesitates, then adds, with more specific emphasis, “I’d like to find out who we’re becoming. If you wanted.”
This time, Ed smiles. It’s soft, and small, and Stede thinks he’s seen this smile when Ed looks at the horizon or makes himself a sandwich or takes Stede into his arms. It’s contentment.
“I just want to do it together,” Stede tells him. “I’m tired of being apart from you. We’ll go as slow as we want.” His eyes flick up to meet Ed’s from this funny angle, so close he can’t help but smile. “As long as we don’t stop.”
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Ed tells him.
“That’s life,” Stede reminds him. “We never know, do we?”

Summary
There’s no stopping Frank’s sunny disposition and bright outlook on life no matter what. He’s the man who fell into Bill’s trap, got a good look at the deadly fence behind Bill while having a gun pointed at his face, then promptly decided the best thing to do would be invite himself in for dinner.
Maybe Bill is partly to blame for enabling that rosy worldview too; after all, he did accept Frank into his home, into his bed, and into his heart.
He has to put his foot down now, though.

Ed's out of the blue question at least answers Stede's anxieties about radio etiquette. He pulls the walkie from his pack and stares at it, deciding how much of his life he actually wants to share with this complete stranger.
"What brings you out here?"
or: Stede takes a job as a remote forest fire lookout in the summer following his divorce, with a plan to find out who he is, and what he wants his life to be. With the help of the enigmatic lookout on the other side of the forest, he ends up getting more out of the experience than he could ever have hoped.

Summary
Stede and Ed - in a flash of either stupidity or genius - come up with a plan to pose as a couple for the holidays. This way, Stede could avoid being set up by Lucius as well as having to come up with a reason why his mysterious partner suddenly wouldn't make the Christmas party Lucius is hosting. It should be easy, in theory. It's only for the party, and maybe the odd time Stede and Ed are seen together in the days leading up to the event.
Except, of course, it isn't.
Because not only does this simple plan get painfully out of hand from the onset, they've been in love with each other for years. They just never told one another. And, they don't intend to.A modern day holiday romcom.

Stede stays silent for a moment. He thinks of Mary, not even meeting his eyes as they performed their marital duties. And he thinks of Ed, pulling back after their first kiss, gazing at him as if Stede were the most beautiful thing in the world.
“Alright,” he whispers.
*Stede doesn't like sex. At least, he thinks he doesn't, because he's never had sex with someone he's actually attracted to before. Ed very patiently teaches him that sex can actually be enjoyable. There is crying. Bon apetit.
