Summary
After a disastrous final shift on July 4, Robby leaves for his sabbatical.
Eight days later, somewhere in the Badlands, he awakens to a dozen missed calls and messages from back home. Something terrible has happened. Frank Langdon has been shot, and he might not make it.
Consumed by worry and by guilt, Robby returns to Pittsburgh, the memory of his last, terrible conversation with Frank playing on a loop in his head.
He hopes it is not too late to make amends of his own.
“Is he dead?” Robby manages to rasp out. His body is curling in on itself. He can feel himself unravelling. It’s too familiar. It’s all too familiar. This can’t be happening. “Is Frank fucking dead, Dana?”

Summary
"The Fire Prince had nightmares. This was something the whole crew had been aware for some time; he’d had a nightmare around the same night he’d started sleeping in the crew cabin. At the time, Panuk hadn’t found it strange, not when the kid had almost drowned and was surrounded by enemies.
It didn’t take him long to start questioning just what it was that caused the prince night terrors, though. He didn’t speak often while it was happening; sometimes he grunted, like he was in pain, but that was about it. But there were the nights… The ones everyone tried to ignore, where he mumbled “please” and “don’t.”"

Summary
The thing is, Lo’ak would have to be cut from the inside out –vertebrae unlocking and bones swinging until he was nothing but a broken cage– for him to open his mouth. And even then, it’d be in vain because he had sewed it shut a long time ago. He was ready for whatever game these demons wanted to play as long as their malicious intent was directed at him.
Pain is physical. Pain means nothing if I don’t give it power.

Summary
Lo’ak’s lungs burned nothing compared to the gaping hole in his gut. But he needed air. He had no energy and the small metal object that was eliciting gentle beeps, lulling him in with the pretence of softness, spelled death. And certainly pain. His cheeks puffed out as he fought against the tempting strain of his throat to open.
There wasn’t much he could do in the face of the blinking red light while trapped in a cage of debris he didn’t have the energy to manoeuvre through. His head drifted down as his legs faltered.
The faint red light flashed faster and faster on the metal object in the dark azure sea.
Depth charges.
The boom was hot and loud and deafening and Lo’ak was sure he was screaming.
The pain encompassed him.

Summary
A heartbeat of silence passes, like his father is considering the question. Like he’s trying to pull up an excuse that Lo’ak might believe, he thinks bitterly, fresh, hot tears wetting his cheeks. So desperately, he just wants his dad. “I know I’m not good, and that I’m always making things worse–”
“Lo’ak.” His father interrupts, finally. It’s not the scolding Lo’ak had been prepared for, that he deserved, and it startles him enough that he glances up, damp eyes wide. His tone had been unexpectedly gentle.
There are tears tracking down his fathers face, a look that Lo’ak doesn’t have a name for creasing his features. “My boy, I love you. You know that, don’t you? That I love you?"
Or, it doesn't always take a dead son for Jake to realize his other one is suffering.

Summary
Christmas Eve night shift was always a place of wonders. Folklore promised animals would speak, but all Frank heard was the usual chorus of wailing, cursing, and the occasional drunken carol. Patients were as rattled as ever, and none of them wanted to be there - though, to be fair, neither did he.
And neither did Santos.
