Summary
After Guinevere’s betrayal, Arthur’s first instinct had been to keep everyone around him at a safe distance. He was the King of Camelot, after all, and with that came great responsibility - it wouldn’t do for him to be so vulnerable ever again. Loving Guinevere as he had in the past had left him exposed, and he couldn’t afford to be hurt like that in the future.
But still, despite all his good intentions, somehow Merlin managed to always slip past his carefully built defences. It shouldn’t be possible, for a person that clumsy and obnoxious to also be this sneaky, but Merlin made it work.

A strange phenomenon had occurred when Arthur had been born by magic. He now had the ability to read minds. Nobody knew of his gifts. Arthur knew from a young age that sorcery was not welcomed in Camelot. With fears that his own father would banish or harm him, he kept his piece of magic to himself. A piece of magic that had become much less of a burden after he had been crowned king, and for moments like these; While he was bored and Merlin daydreamed.

Gaius pressures Arthur to renegotiate the servant contracts to prevent them further harm, causing the Knights and Crowned Prince to discover some of what happened to their friend.

Somebody, please get Arthur and Merlin proposed to and wed! I don't mind which of them proposes to the other, though it would be quite interesting to see Merlin do the asking and being all shy/nervous because he's a servant asking the king/crown prince to marry him... Canon era is preferred.
Merlin doesn’t know what takes hold of his mind and possesses him to blurt out what might quite possibly be the most foolish thing he has ever said (quite an accomplishment, even he’ll admit)...
