“It doesn’t bother me. I would get terribly bored if I slept for as long as you three do! It’d be like–oh, it’d be like putting Ben on shore leave for a few months.” Jamie does have to laugh at that. The way Ben acts around the TARDIS sometimes, it seems he’s still trying to assemble a crew and pretend they’re seafaring, not timefaring. “Besides, there’s plenty to keep me occupied.” The Doctor gives Jamie a warm look, like they’re sharing a secret. “You know how much tending to the TARDIS needs.”
Jamie could prod back that the Doctor himself is probably the cause of half of the problems that need tending to, but instead he purses his lips and searches the Doctor’s gaze.

He wonders what Didoans look like, if they’re great, bug-eyed creatures with slimy skin or big cats with five ears and beetle-wings that rest at odd angles under tweed coats. (The Doctor would scold him if he spoke like that. Symmetry is perfectly common in nature, Jamie, he would say. It helps with balancing and reacting to the environment from all sides. The cats would only have four ears).

But that wasn’t the point, was it? The point had never been Eòghann, too busy with Sàra to laugh at a silly old joke with him. It stung, yes – but like the snow, he could brush it away easily enough, and still never dip into the yawning gap in his chest that lay beneath it.
The first traces of watery light were creeping over the horizon, just where the line of the trees parted into fields. Sunrise would be many hours away yet, the deep blue of the night splitting into lighter colours – and here, caught between night and daybreak, he could almost believe nothing would ever change.
If nothing ever changed, then nobody could grow up without him. He wouldn’t turn around and find all his friends sat at the back of the ceilidh-house – and he wouldn’t look down at himself and wonder if he had been left a child, watching them run on ahead.
Over and over again, Jamie tries to understand himself.
