The issue was, when somebody, or everybody, diagnoses you as unlovable, you begin to crave the love you’re unable to receive more than anything else on earth. And Awsten wanted it so fucking bad. He’d watch movies with partners and yearn for the type of love playing out on the screen. Soft glances, gentle caresses of the face, slowly making out on some stupid rooftop. He wanted that. He needed that.
But Awsten was decidedly unloveable, so he wasn’t allowed to have that.

The situation is, admittedly, not completely out of left field. One might have guessed that Awsten’s girlfriend with a history of cheating would eventually cheat on him. But honestly, having it happen right in the middle of a tour before their new album was a curveball and a dick move.
The only mysterious thing about it is that he’s also picked up the habit of avoiding Otto like the plague.

"You're blond!" Geoff laughs. He ruffles Awsten's hair. "You haven't been properly blond in years."
Otto doesn't speak, hat gripped in a fist. He swallows almost imperceptibly. His eyes stay locked on Awsten's hair, shoulders twitching slightly in some aborted gesture.
"You don't like it?" Awsten asks, his voice teasing but he's genuinely worried that Otto is about to turn around and get back on a plane to Houston.
"You said you wouldn't go blond again." Otto mumbles.

Awsten, as a Sentinel with no Guide, and as a sentinel whose job includes nightly rock concerts, really ought to be experiencing more sensory overload than he is. By all means, he's flying without a net and he should be in a coma by now. There's only two explanations: one, Awsten's a medical miracle and he's somehow the most self-sufficient Sentinel on the planet, or two, there's a Guide who's been secretly helping him out.
He's determined to get to the bottom of it.
