Summary
Peter had come to term with a few things.
The first was that his mere presence was a curse to those around him. It was a sheer miracle that Morgan was still as vivacious as ever, even with him lurking like a squatter forced out of the rain.
The second was that his guardians never had chosen him—he was a burden after the last parent passed, and continued to be burden now.
The third was that he never would fit into Tony’s family. No matter just how much he wanted to.

Glancing back at the table James can see Peter chatting with the women, flashing an intentionally charming grin, (actually pretty reminiscent of Tony’s patented ‘innocent smile’ now that he thinks about it) but at least someone's having fun.

He disappears, and Peter can’t physically force himself to get back to work. There is this uncomfortable feeling that is sitting in the bottom of his stomach, something secretive and awful.
Tony looks perfectly fine again by the time he emerges from the washroom nearly ten minutes later, but it doesn’t soothe Peter’s nerves in the slightest.

Mr Stark didn’t know where he was. Mr Stark had no idea he was in the suit at all. As far as he was concerned, Peter was on the journey around New York just above a mustard yellow taxi on his evening patrols. Peter shouldn’t have stayed quiet. The Avengers would’ve helped—they’d begged Peter a thousand times to just ask.
But now, he didn't know where he was. What they wanted from him. What they’d injected into his body to make his limbs feel like melted rubber that had been compressed by a road roller.
At least he knew one thing. Mr Stark wasn’t coming to save him.

He’d been closer before, hadn’t he? Closer to dying? He’d taken hits that should’ve flattened him. So why did this near miss make him feel like his soul was trying to crawl out of him?
His pulse was a drumbeat in his throat. He could still see the flash of the bullet in his peripheral vision, the narrow line it carved through the air, the way it had missed him. Barely, barely.
Spider-Man didn’t panic, but Peter Parker did.
Or
Peter Parker, the kid who could be stabbed, shot, thrown at a brick wall and still stand up and laugh about it; has a near miss with a bullet and it terrifies him. Tony has to navigate calming down a kid who can’t hear him properly.
