Summary
Dean is fragile—like the silence that has made home in his throat. Sometimes, in the dead of the night, when it’s just him and his cold, dark and empty room, Dean would reach up and feel his own face—a baseless need to make sure he hasn’t turned into mist or whatever. It’s not that Dean’s lost his voice or anything—he can feel it down in his throat, though it’s rattling in his chest, stuck and unmoving. Every time he tries to speak, the weight of each word presses down on his chest until he feels his ribs ache, like he’s having compressions done on him and his bones are starting to cave under the pressure. There’s something vaguely familiar about this feeling—an urge to make himself as small as he can until he sinks into the walls. Everything around him feels out of place, and a size bigger—the bunker, his room, his own skin—with too many empty spaces like an ill-fitting suit. He could pull a few words out of his throat if he pushes hard enough, but Dean’s so goddamn exhausted.
But, even when he feels like a shadow of who he used to be, Cas is still the one thing that makes him feel more alive than his own burdened beating heart.

Dean felt like he died that day in the dungeon. Even after Cas came back, he still felt like a ghost haunting the bunker. So Dean drives and he drives.
And then one day, he happens upon a run-down house for sale, and it just feels like a place he could belong. The air is fresh here, and there’s a back porch, like his parents’ old house had. He puts in an offer right then and there.
The most important part is that Cas likes it, too, and suddenly there’s a garden and a beehive out back, and ugly linen curtains that Cas picked out. Dean isn’t saying anything, but it’s obvious.
The house is too big for just one person.

Unfortunately, Dean Winchester is nothing if not stubborn.
He sucks on his teeth for a moment, roughly picks up his duffel, and slings it over his shoulder as he storms past Cas in the doorway with a bite of, “Go get in the damn car,”.
(TLDR: Cas is rescued from the empty, human. Dean wants to stop hunting because he loves Cas, but can't figure out how to let himself; however, he doesn't want Cas to hunt either, because he loves him. Conflict, angstiness, and love ensues.)

Well, Dean most certainly doesn't handle Cas' death very well and so somehow he ends up grieving in his own special way: by building a home and praying that one day he will share it with someone very particular.
Deep down Dean knows it's a futile hope and probably not really healthy to cling onto it so desperately, but at the end of the day dreams occasionally come true, even for a Winchester.

A few beats of silence pass—nothing out of the ordinary, at this point.
“...Is this what’s happening?” Sam asks gently, implementing that tone of voice that always seems to remind Dean with a heart clenched in nostalgia that his brother is not a little boy anymore, but rather is now a grown man with an impressive emotional maturity.
(TLDR: Dean Winchester and selective mutism: told throughout different stages of his life now that it has come back in full-force yet again after losing Cas to the Empty. Angst, hurt/comfort, and most importantly: happy ending.)

It had been 1 year, 8 months, and 11 days since Castiel died. It was all starting to feel so hopeless. But Dean knew he had to get up. He had to live for Castiel, since Castiel died for him. And also at the 1 year anniversary of Castiel’s death, Dean had decided that not getting out of bed was the best option until Sam busted into his room on the third day and told him that if he didn’t get up, he’d put him in a psych ward. Maybe he should just go to one anyway. For 1 year, 7 months, and 11 days, Dean has refused to do anything that wasn’t looking for a way to save Cas. (The first month was spent figuring out how to best God, doing so, and then having a very close call in some dumbass’s barn. Seriously, who puts a sharpened piece of rebar on their wall? Idiot. Dean went through the motions of getting ready in the morning. He got ready, then went to the Library.
AKA Dean, struggling to deal with Castiel's death, learns that Castiel is somehow back. But there's something very different and very wrong with him.

When Dean finally walked back through the doorway into the Kitchen, Cas finally got a good look at him for the first time since they got home. And immediately his mild concern transformed into full-blown worry. He had a blank and glassy look in his eyes and his hands lay limp at his side. His face was tilted towards the floor, he had stopped walking when he got into the kitchen. Cas feels his period of observation end as Dean raises his down-turned gaze to meet Cas’, and the look in his eyes makes him ache.
“Oh, Dean” Cas’ eyebrows raise in concern, “What’s wrong?”
Or, When Dean refuses to let Cas heal him after a hunt gone wrong, Dean has some big feelings and Cas takes care of him.
