Sequel to I Still Miss Someone and I Know That I Miss You, but I Don't Know Where I Stand. When last we left John and Paul, it was mid-1976 and they seemed to have come to an understanding. Now it's 1979. Paul has received a phone call from Yoko asking him to come to New York to cheer up John. Though it's right before the Christmas holiday, he drops everything to visit, only to find that John does not appear happy to see him. John's POV.

He gulps down his anxiety, feels it get sliced up by the glass in his gut, and opens his mouth.
“When I was a kid, I thought my brother’s favorite food was ketchup.”

He’d been crying (John remembered that much, remembered thinking he actually possessed the ability to reach out and dry Arthur’s face if his stupid fucking arms weren’t so heavy), tears streaming down his cheeks and dribbling over his chin, panting so hard that John feared he might black out and crumple to the floor next to him in a pile of too-thin limbs.
And he remembered what his friend had said to him in that moment, breath practically nonexistent, voice saturated and breaking and—despite it all—with such an overwhelming undercurrent of relief, the kind of which one only felt after years upon years of unmitigated pain.
“She’s alive,” Arthur Lester had sobbed, clutching his little girl to his heaving chest as he fell forward, trusting that his other half, now outside, would catch him. He did. He always would. “She’s alive, John.”

"His arms still felt tense without the connection to Arthur. Anxiety – was that what that was? – was brewing in his gut at the distance between them, despite it only being two feet at most. At least in Arthur’s eyes he had a better position to warn him should something approach; now there were too many distractions, and the angle was off. He had an almost overpowering urge to grab onto Arthur again, hold him tight against his body and never let him go ever again. That way they could be close again, close enough to protect against any threats, close enough to feel… whole."

John and Arthur finally separate and temporarily stay in New York to get used to this new arrangement. It doesn't go as well as they might have hoped.

The pair adapt to their life in the orphanage; depicting their very different perspectives of their situation. We see the hell Johan endured in Kinderheim, experience the distortion of his memories and the disconnect he desperately clings to regarding his emotions. He tries to remain human; to avoid the Nameless Monster beckoning for him from the shadows. Until Boneparte visits and he is cornered into bloodying his hands once again.
Only, Anna does not shoot Johan that fateful rainy night.
