The nightmare had begun a mere eighteen months ago, triggered by a single, catastrophic breach in the Muggle-Repelling Charms encompassing the stadium at the National Quidditch Finals. To this day, the Ministry did not know exactly how it had happened. The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy had held firm for centuries, an impenetrable veil between the two worlds. But a tiny, microscopic crack had been more than enough.
Enough for the Muggles to capture and broadcast what they were never meant to witness—wizards spiralling on broomsticks, brilliant silver Patronuses streaking through the twilight sky—and flood their vast, interconnected internet with undeniable proof.
Within days, global curiosity had tipped inexorably into mass hysteria and fear. That fear rapidly twisted into a virulent, unforgiving hate. And that hate actively begged for total destruction.

The beach vacation photo hit the celebrity gossip circuit like a tidal wave:
Severus Snape — shirtless and emerging from the sea like a selkie who had laid claim to his mate, had one bikini-clad Hermione Granger slung over his shoulder, in a fireman-carry.
Behind them, their seven children trailed, looking utterly unimpressed. As if watching their shirtless father carry their mother like a caveman was just any other day.
Harry Potter's statement to the press pool followed:
“Hermione Granger-Snape is my best friend. And, yes, she has been married to Severus Snape for the better part of a decade. And, yes, I mean *that* Severus Snape. They have seven children together. If you weren't aware of all this by now, that’s not their fault. They haven't been hiding, they've just been living the quiet life they've built on purpose. And I think they'd appreciate it if we let them keep it."
The wizarding public was very much NOT in agreement on that last part.

She noticed for the first time how meticulously tailored his robes were, fitted to him like a second skin. She tried but failed to imagine the body beneath.He just seemed so unilaterally formed, like a gargoyle affixed to the ramparts.
In the seven years that she had known him, she had only ever seen him as this shadowy figment, a procurer of tasks and dispenser of lectures. Her mind couldn’t find its way to a reality in which he existed as a man of flesh and breath. How could he, she thought, possess any of those tender and vulnerable afflictions of the human condition? He wasn’t human. He was… Snape.

The war was at an end, and they had lost so many. Too many. The battle might have been won and Tom Riddle dead, but there was so much now that would need to be dealt with. The castle was a mess—so much structural damage had been done by the collective strength of the spells flying haphazardly all over the place, not to mention the numerous funerals that would need to be held, who to elect in charge of the Ministry now that there was a power vacuum, and what they were going to do about all of the Death Eaters who had fled upon Riddle’s demise.
And yet all Hermione could think of, kept seeing when she would close her eyes to blink, was the sheer relief mixed with pain as she remembered the dark eyes of her former professor, gazing up at her as the light left them. If there was something she could do, would she do it? The answer was simple.

This is a revamp of a fic I posted on ff.net back in 2013, it was a birthday present for JennyBean23. I'm posting it here now because I'd like all my stories here, as this is now my primary posting place.
It is a short story, that cane be summarised as follows - Take one snarky Potions master, a Gryffindor witch with a liking for Slytherins, add in a Malfoy and a Potter both struggling with confusing feelings, and you come up with a well mixed couple of pairs who all see sides in each other they didn't expect. Very AU and definitely non-canon compliant.
