Alex doesn’t know how to answer the question. He already misses Henry.
The unspoken rules they made for whatever they’ve been doing over the past year have slowly started to deteriorate. Now that there is an end in sight, there isn’t much point in minimizing the small talk. There’s no need to sneak back to their respective apartments in the middle of the night to avoid waking up next to each other in the morning.

I have feelings about this. There are so few LGBTQ religious characters in the fanfic I read, and this obviously does not contain someone who is religious, it's about religious trauma and abuse. I have thinky thoughts that I want to work out so I'm bookmarking this until I have those sorted
This story without the religious guilt was fantastic. But for me personally, the headspace I would need to read this once a year is so specific that I'm not sure if it will happen.

I’ve already told him about the memory loss. He knows it’s 2023 and that he lost almost four years of memories. I think it may be best to update him on his current situation. His day to day life is drastically different then it was in 2019, is that correct?”
“Yeah, I would say.” Alex huffs out a bitter laugh.
Henry is in an accident and thinks it's still 2019. He still believes Alex hates him, and Alex is a just as much of a mess as you think he would be.

Ellen’s lips pinch tightly at the corners. “Then they will issue a full denial and Henry will tour the commonwealth himself.”
Alex doesn't hesitate. “Tell them we’ll do it. I’m not gonna let him do this alone."
It would kill him. Henry hates this shit. The public parading, the judgment. Having to do all of that, and deny who he is? Alex at least wants to be there, to hold his hand through it. Even if it's just as a friend.
It might kill Alex to pretend, but that’s a small price to pay to ensure Henry—his beautiful, vibrant, funny-as-hell, brilliant ex-not-quite-boyfriend—isn’t killed instead.

Sometimes, in the back of his mind, he can still hear the boxes rattling in the old hallways, June’s bedroom door slammed shut, his parents arguing in the kitchen. Every muscle tensed, pillows over his ears, feeling like there was something he was supposed to be doing to fix it but never sure what it was.
If there’s anything he’s learned, it’s that sometimes silence is better than screaming. Henry might go quiet sometimes, but he’s never gone.
He always, always comes back. And that’s what’s important.
