“I just don’t get why you couldn’t at least text,” Steve ground out, shoving his fists deeper into his pockets.
He’d tried to remind himself that it wasn’t uncommon for one of them to go on a mission without the other. They did that all the time. It’s just that this one was twice as long. And they hadn’t talked at all during it.
Irritation had been prickling under his skin since he’d met Bucky in the conference room after debrief. It was the first time Steve had seen him, had even heard from him in two months, and he’d jogged up to Bucky expecting a warm hug and a kiss that pushed the limits of public indecency. Instead, he’d been met with a blank face and cold, distant eyes that made his skin crawl and sent shivers down his spine.

Bucky looks up when the door opens with a soft click, reaching for his gun even though he knows the rest of the gang is on patrol and security is top-notch, only settling when he sees that it’s his omega who’s standing in the illuminated doorway. “Hey, beautiful. What’re you doing up?” Bucky is automatically worrying, standing and going to tug Tony against his chest and rumbling quietly when Tony presses his face to Bucky’s chest.
“Can’t sleep.” The response is mumbled against Bucky’s chest and the alpha pulls back a little to kiss Tony’s soft, downy hair. “Baby’s kicking.”
Bucky tugs the omega away from his chest, tipping Tony’s chin up with his metal hand and pressing their lips together. He sighs into the other’s mouth--the familiarity of it soothing especially after the oh so fun time he’s having reading through reports, unfortunately getting increasingly pissed at HYDRA and AIM who’ve been bigger pains in his ass than usual. And Tony is always a nice distraction.

Summary
Bucky is 37 years old; he’s unmarried, hasn’t had a Sub of his own, is definitely not ripped, comfortable at his job as an Advanced Practice RN at Brooklyn General ER, and just got his Five Years coin from AA.
Steve is 26 years old; he’s unmarried, his last and only Dom has Alzheimer's, he's worryingly muscular, uncomfortable in his job as the government’s poster Alpha for masculinity and strength, and worries more than he should about his BMI.
Unfortunately, Steve and Bucky meet initially in a not-cute moment. Bucky’s tired as shit thanks to the sudden alien invasion that shook New York and Steve is tired as shit because he hasn’t slept more than 20 minutes at a time in – well, since 1936, probably. Bucky’s Alpha instincts get irritated at the sudden presence of another "Alpha" into his territory and Steve’s suppressed submissive tendencies latch onto this grumpy bachelor Alpha and he only suppresses it further.
Bucky’s grumpiness and Steve’s duckling impressionism aside, both of them are a mess. But since both of them are a mess? Their messes seem to fit pretty well together.Series

Bucky expects to find Steve waiting for him on the landing pad on the roof of the tower, because he knows someone would have thought to tell Steve he was coming home. He may have spent the whole flight dreaming about their reunion, imagining himself picking Steve up and slamming him against the nearest surface, their clothes magically falling off, swept away by a tide of passion, and then them scarring everyone in the tower by having sex right there and then.
What he gets is an empty apartment and the smell of rancid food flooding his nostrils.
