"You should not be here," Charles murmured, voice low and fragile, caught somewhere between defiance and prayer.
The words were neither rejection nor acceptance.
Erik met his gaze for a long moment, eyes rimmed red and glassy, as if he hadn't slept since Cuba. Since he left Charles bleeding on a distant shore, their newly formed family fractured.
"I have no other haven," Erik said, voice hoarse, stripped of its former steel. He clutched his hat tightly, fingers trembling. "I thought I did, but that belief was nothing but a cruel illusion."
