Summary
It was the middle of the night, though maybe it was closer to morning now? He’d been sitting there for a long time.
The floor of his loft was cold, even more so near his giant window. The city below him was rushing around as usual, LA just never stopped. For hours he just sat there, pressed against the glass, staring down at life continuing on without him.
He spared a thought to that for just a moment, he could allow himself this. If he were to just disappear without a trace, nothing but his physical belongings remaining, would anyone grieve? Of course they would, to an extent. They’d mourn the Buck they used to love, the Buck that didn’t destroy everything, their imaginary Buck. Some may even cry over the man they wished he was. But would anyone truly miss him?

"What?" Buck asked."Nothing," Eddie said back all too quickly.
"Doesn't sound like nothing."
Eddie turned to look at Buck in contemplation, pausing like he wasn't sure whether to open up the conversation or tell Buck he was being paranoid.
"Can't be a know-it-all if people keep secrets," he said.
Buck narrowed his eyes back at him.
"Secrets?" he asked.
He didn't know what Eddie was about to say until the moment before it came out of his mouth. He should have seen it coming, really. Should have known that it would come up at some point and that not mentioning it earlier would make it all the more difficult to deny.
He didn't think this would be the moment they had to address it though.
"You... didn't tell me about Tommy."
aka. Eddie and Buck get trapped below ground level after the earthquake waiting to be rescued, and Eddie asks Buck why he didn't tell him what happened with Tommy

Summary
The day Buck receives the settlement offer, he is ready to reject it to win back his job and his family at Station 118. But when Christopher is rushed to the hospital needing a critical, very expensive spinal surgery on the other side of the country that insurance won't cover, Buck breaks his legal no-contact order and races to Eddie's side.
To save Christopher's mobility, Buck makes the ultimate sacrifice: he accepts the payout. He willingly plays the villain, letting Bobby, Maddie, and the crew believe he chose greed over loyalty, and exiles himself to Florida to help Christopher heal in secret. Back in LA, Eddie must silently endure a resentful firehouse, anchored by a devastating truth: "If the choice is between you and Christopher, you will lose every time."

“I’m Derek.”
His voice felt startlingly real as it left his throat. Reality yanked him back into the car in a rush, back beside Eddie, and he gasped for air.
Damn it.
Eddie was staring at him.
That look. A mix of shock, worry… or whatever else was reflected in Eddie’s brown eyes right now. Buck didn’t want to be responsible for that. He jerked his gaze away, searching for the timer and feeling grateful when he realized it was time for a break again.Bookmarked by JRAS

Summary
"I'm Buck."
"Buck," Eddie tests the name out. Buck. He likes that name. It sounds good, warm and safe and comfortingly familiar on his tongue. "You're my husband."
Buck's eyes widen, obviously surprised that Eddie remembered that. See, look? He's recovering remarkably quickly. He'll have his full memory back in no time.
"Your husband," Buck repeats and Chris, for some reason, starts giggling.
"My husband," Eddie agrees happily.

Eddie suffers temporary amnesia after an injury at work and makes some assumptions about the nature of his and Buck's relationship.

“Excuse me? If you don’t mind me asking, where’s Mr Diaz? I specifically requested to speak with Eddie. You are not him.”
The man tilts his head at that, a quizzical expression forming between his brows, and Ana can’t help but be reminded of a confused puppy.

“You have a son. Who’s already nearly lost you more times than any kid should. Think about what would happen to him if you died. I know you usually do everything in your power to get back home to him but what happens if your luck runs out? He loses his dad and gets shipped back to Texas to live with your parents? We all know that’s the last thing you want.”
Eddie watches as Bobby runs a hand through his hair. He clears his throat, wincing slightly at the lingering pain, and states matter-of-factly, “He’d go to Buck, actually.”

“What do you mean you’re in the bridal suite?” Buck barks into the phone, pacing up and down the incredibly plush carpeting of this hotel room. “I’m in the fucking bridal suite.”
“Okay, Buck, calm down. What do you mean? We’ve got all the romantic stuff laid out—the strawberries and the chocolate and the champagne—”
“I’ve got the strawberries and the chocolate and the champagne,” Buck whispers, fingers so tight around his phone he thinks he can hear something cracking.
“What?” Maddie asks. “Hmm. Maybe there was a mix-up with the reservations? They’re both under Buckley, so… Do you want me to call the reception?”
Buck sighs. “No, no, of course not, Mads. Sorry, I’ll call them. It’s fine, I’ll just—I’ll get another room, because Eddie’ll be here in a few hours…”
or, having multiple wedding reservations under the same name was an accident waiting to happen and buck’s just trying not to jumpscare his best friend with the rather intense bridal suite decor in their very platonically shared hotel room

A person who listens to whatever inane, mundane shit Buck is incapable of not spouting? Actually listens, with interjected questions and regular mmhms of acknowledgement? Indulgent of every tangent, every spiel, unless Buck is actively sowing terror in the hearts of victims on calls with his worst-case scenario stories.
He has that person. Eddie. According to May, that makes Eddie his person, a thought that has a bloom of warmth unfurling in his chest.
It might not be romantic, but it’s—it’s something.
And it’s worth Buck trying to get back to who they were. When their shift is over, he follows Eddie home like he might’ve done a year ago.
or, buck learns about bird theory. eddie, unsurprisingly, is the only one who passes with flying colours

“I mean,” Eddie backtracks hastily, “that I probably don’t—uh, that I don’t want a hook up. Just the single, uh, kiss. For research.”
“Right,” Buck nods. “For research.”
They turn back to the TV, sipping beers and spooning dessert, room quiet save for the telenovela playing. Buck, gun to his head, could not tell you who or what is on the screen right now. The brave, strong part of his brain has surrendered shamefully, white flag hoisted while the rest of his brain—stupid, stupid—hosts a skillfully imagined supercut of his best friend kissing men. It’s surprisingly new subject matter for him. What’s unsurprising is his distaste for every conjured scenario, discarding each indistinguishable stranger until the reel buffers on something more… familiar.
“Well—”
Eddie waits a patient minute for Buck to continue before asking, “Well, what?”
“I just mean—if it’s just a kiss, right.” Buck pauses. “You could, uh. You could try it with me.”
or, buck thinks kissing men and women feels pretty much the same. eddie’s not buying it. sometimes settling a bet requires kissing your best friend, a lot, for research

Summary
“Oh,” Eddie yells after him, tone almost mocking. “So that’s it? You’re just going to walk away?”
Buck stops, biting down on his cheek. He knows, distantly, that they’re making a scene. That everyone who isn’t actively putting what’s left of the fire out can see and hear everything they’re saying. He sighs. “I don’t know why you’re so pissed,” he mutters, twisting back around to face him just in time to see Eddie’s eyebrows rise high up on his forehead.
“You don’t know why I’m pissed?” Eddie asks, stepping towards him.
Shit. He needs to walk away before this blows up. They’re one throw away comment from explosion.
Buck whips back around, taking a step towards the engine and away from Eddie. “That’s what I said,” he calls over his shoulder. Which—maybe, isn’t the thing to say to cool things down.
But—
“I’m pissed,” Eddie shouts back, voice frayed and desperate, “Because I fucking love you.”
