Pete longs for a sweetheart.
He doesn’t remember his parents all that well but he knows they were in a deep, all encompassing love. He has faded photographs, letters they wrote each other, bundled up together in a shoebox under his bed. On a good day his Uncle would tell him stories about his parents if he were tipsy and feeling sentimental, the sweet spot he stayed in before he became belligerent and hot tempered. “Pete, my brother looked at your mama look she hung the damn stars in the sky.” He’d told him once. “'My whole world', that’s what he called her.”
Sometimes, Pete will lay in bed and stare up at the ceiling, listening to the snores of his roommate as he lets himself wax poetic. The love of my life could be on this very campus. He would think, biting at his lip to keep from smiling. My whole world could be just around the corner.
And he was.

“That part was for me.” Ray breathed in, steady. “Now I want to ask for something to mark the moment. So I’ll remember this really happened.”
Pete crossed his arms, curious. “And what would that be?”
Ray hesitated for long seconds, biting his lower lip, a gesture that seemed involuntary, almost childish, but dangerous in its sincerity.
“Could you…” He swallowed hard, blushing all the way to his ears. “Sign my tits?”.

“Stop!” Ray screams, so loud his voice cracks. “God, f-fucking stop it with the ‘baby’ crap! You know, you m-m-made me — you made me think — I thought we were O-O-Orpheus and Eurydice, walking out of hell, you know?”
“Ray,” Pete says helplessly. “I don’t know what that means.”
His big, dumb cow eyes are mean with tears. “The poet,” he shoves Pete in the chest, “and the f-f-fucking corpse.”
Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and Ray brings Pete breakfast in bed. Things spiral from there.

The moments after the Walk had officially ended, when Ray had fallen to his knees after hauling Pete up and urging him forward, when the Major had stood beside Ray with his pistol pointed at the back of his head, two other soldiers with carbines pointed at Ray’s gut, his brain had stopped working. He had heard Ray receive his final warning, the numbers as much a physical wound as his ruined body, and had screamed, “Wait!”
The Major had looked at him, cocked his head in curiosity, his expression unreadable behind his aviators. Ray, sprawled like a broken thing across the wet asphalt, forced his head up to peer blearily at Pete from beneath his hair, but Pete had continued, unperturbed. “I want my Wish! I’ve won, he’s got his ticket, and I want my fucking Wish!”

Why people go crazy and do stupid shit in the name of love and sex. Because Ray, well Ray would die for the boy underneath him. But Ray is also a mess of anxiety and self-loathing, still unsure as to why Pete would want me. Two conflicting natures that make Ray want to run away and also want to never be not touching Pete again. So, they’ve been working up to this.

Summary
McVries tells him about meeting Ray when he’d only just meant to be passing through Freeport. He casually asks Stebbins if he believes in soulmates while he’s elbow-deep in the ceiling, and when Stebbins freezes stock still on the ladder, he only laughs that easy laugh of his and keeps on describing their meet-cute like he wasn’t really expecting an answer anyway. It’s a sweet story. Romantic, at least in the way McVries tells it.
It’s the kind of story that twists Stebbins up in places he didn’t even realize could get knots until his smile looks like it hurts. It was love at first sight. McVries doesn’t ask if he believes in that, too, and Stebbins is grateful that he doesn’t have to stutter out an answer that he’s not entirely sure he knows.

God, she was so wrong. Unbelievably wrong. He'd spent his whole life confused, directionless, no idea who he was or what he wanted. He barely allowed himself to think about what he might want. He'd been living for other people, for her, mostly, until he'd met Pete and everything clicked into place. He wanted this, wanted Pete, in every possible way.
In other words; Ray comes out to his mother. It goes badly. He turns to Pete for a distraction.

Art jerks his head to the center of the circle, where Ray has somehow failed to notice an empty glass bottle on the carpeted floor. “Spin the bottle,” Art supplies helpfully.
“Ah.” Ray suddenly regrets walking into the room. He’s not sure how comfortable he feels about playing a kissing game. He’s only ever kissed one person: his ex-girlfriend Jan who he’d dated for a year in high school. He’s never been one to just casually make out with someone at a party. He definitely has no desire to see Pete make out with anyone, either.
“And Seven Minutes in Heaven,” Collie adds, waggling his eyebrows. He jerks his thumb at a closed door behind him. “Whoever you land on, you go into the closet with them for seven minutes.”

So as he was approaching McVries’ dorm, he knew his place in this situation. He was a gift in this relationship.
While Garraty and McVries lived their university dreams of having a perfect relationship together, Stebbins was nothing more than a gift. A way for Garraty to feed his fascination while McVries got to spoil Garraty with allowing Stebbins in.
But not fully, he thought to himself. He knew he was just here temporarily. Garraty would soon be bored of his current obsession and move on to something else, Stebbins no longer being allowed to sneak his way into this relationship. He already knew that once the chase was over, Garraty would stop trying so hard to claim Stebbins, losing the fun of running after him.
Or, Stebbins joins McVries and Garraty’s relationship, not fully realising his role is more important than he first understood
