“So handsome,” is Max’s only reply, his fingers sliding free from Charles’ hold before they’re moving up to his face and a lone digit presses into his dimple. It only makes Charles smile which, in turn, makes Max gasp and poke him even harder. “I want to take your face off.”
OR: Max enjoys the marvels of modern medicine after he goes into the barrier during a race. Charles tries to be cool about it.

Pascale looks at him. For a moment it is an odd look. But that quickly melts into a smile. One that is gentle around the eyes, and soft on the mouth. Somehow, it makes Charles feel young again — younger than how he already feels; twenty-one in a world where he is twenty-five.
“You don’t have to imagine it, mon garçon,” she says quietly. “It has already happened.”

Another fucking P14 at Silverstone, for the second year in a row.
As he drives his car into parc fermé, Charles barely manages to resist the urge to scream in frustration. He wants to slam his hands against the dash, rip off the steering wheel and throw it as hard as he can at the nearest wall.
His race was over the second the team decided to pit him for slicks after the formation lap, and Charles had been paying the price of it ever since.
Today really cannot possibly get worse.
Except it does. Because this is Charles, this is a rainy race day at Silverstone, and this is the Scuderia Ferrari which has been the bane of Charles' fucking existence for the past few years.
So of course the universe finds some way to make his day even worse.

Charles’ eyes get even bigger, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline. He makes a noise that if Max were a slightly less merciful person he would call a squeak. Watching him make the absolutely unhinged connection in real time is fascinating. Then carefully, in tentative English, You are hearing my thoughts?
Miserable, Max nods. Then shrugs. Fuck.
“Max,” Charles practically hisses, his grip on Max’s hand going tighter. The pinprick of his nails feels like the only thing connecting Max to the earth. “What the fuck?”

Lance doesn’t know which of his emotions is more overpowering; the secondhand embarrassment he feels at how blatantly obvious they’re being, or the fact that watching Max and Charles in their own little world is actually kind of cute.
He realizes it’s the secondhand embarrassment as he watches Max shamelessly grin at James and proudly explain that he was just talking to Charles.
Lance has to resist the urge to roll his eyes, especially when he notices how Charles is quite literally the embodiment of the heart eyes emoji where he’s standing next to Max for his entire interview. And the beeline Charles makes for Max as soon as he hands the microphone to Lance after his P2 interview is even worse than the heart eyes.
He definitely should have been paying attention to that group chat, Jesus fucking Christ.

That draws a surprised laugh from Max, who stares at him with wide eyes. “And you don’t actually have someone to bring home for Christmas, I take it?”
“No,” the Monégasque admits, rubbing at the back of his neck.
“Damn,” Max huffs, sounding both surprised and amused. “You didn’t give her a fake name as well, did you?”
And, well, at least he didn’t technically do that.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Charles lets out a groan and leans his head back against the wall again, staring at the bright Lusail sky.
He takes a deep breath, deciding he’s already told Max too much to back out now, and offers him the kind of honesty he was unable to offer his own mother.
“I might have told her I was bringing you?”
