Pulling from the tale of Loki and the serpent from Norse mythology. Thor learns of his brother's imprisonment and goes to rescue him. Only to find that he might be too late, (500 years too late).
Loki is ill, weak, and overall broken when Thor drags him home from the mountain. And though the torture was miserable, the reality of recovery might be worse.

Hidden safely down in the dark as he waits for his plan to come together, Loki is approached by his favorite soldier. Clint Barton has questions, doubts about the future. But when Loki digs a little further, he finds that they aren't the questions and doubts he expected, or perhaps feared, to hear. They are, in a way, much worse.
And yet in the bargain, Loki finds a way to draw the ties that bind them a little tighter. Or maybe he's just too weak by now to do what needs to be done.
Later, Clint has a long ride home in which to think. It's not nearly enough to escape the memory of Loki behind his eyes and under his skin, especially when he arrives to find home not quite as safe as he left it.
