Summary
Grace has come to terms with the fact that he will never see another human or Earth again. And that's okay, because he's happy on Erid with Rocky and Adrian. However, with the Hail Mary in mint condition, the Eridians propose that he travels to a red moon in a planetary system with a dead sun, along with Adrian and Rocky, to determine just why it's so...weird. The answer's no. Obviously.
Until they hear a human distress signal coming from that exact moon, and suddenly everything changes.

Grace has been on Erid for four years; it’s been a very peaceful time for hIm, and he’s adapted wonderfully. he has his regular classes with the peebles and a very comfortable place to live. Earth even sends him a space probe loaded with food, clothing, and other basic necessities as a way of thanking him for saving them.
Life in erid is good.
Until a second space probe arrives.

Somehow, in some twisted, unbelievable turn of events, the fate of the entire planet, billions upon billions of people, had fallen on Ryland Grace's shoulders. It was a burden he wasn't fit to carry. A burden that he could feel in all its massiveness weighing down on his chest, squeezing his lungs until all he could eke out of them where wheezing, barely-there breaths.
He pressed his forehead harder against his knees and curled his fingers tight around some of the fabric of his pants, his knuckles turning white. He couldn't—this wasn't how it was supposed to—

Simon.
Or Ryland Grace is a middle school teacher turned lead astrophage scientist. Simon Fischer is a convict turned engineering specialist. Surely absolutely nothing could go wrong on a cosmic scale because neither of them are astronauts.

Summary
Grace's tongue nervously licks the front of his teeth. He taps at his door frame, waiting, searching for another sign— but Simon remains, seemingly settled on the idea that Grace will give, first.
Grace inhales sharply, selfishly, like he's stealing something from Simon. But his heart, too, is a fickle thing, so as much as he wants to prolong his lonely mornings, he doesn’t find it in himself to shut the door on Simon.
Or, an introspective character study on Grace and murdering one's desires. The interconnected narrative of white individualism, ego, and love for thy neighbour.

“Yeah. Nothing beats cuddles, if you ask me,” Grace said, trying to lighten the mood.
Simon’s frown only deepened. “I wouldn’t really know.”
Grace’s smile dropped. He fidgeted with his glasses, an idea already forming, but no. No, that’s a lot to ask. Too much. They’re barely friends. More like roommates of pure circumstance who mostly get along.
But what if…?
“Would you…” Grace started. Stopped. Tried again. “This is like, totally no pressure, and you can say no. But, uh, if you wanted to, we could, um—”
“Spit it out, man,” Simon said, not unkindly, if a little annoyed.
“Wouldyouwanttotrycuddlingwithme?”
Simon blinked. “What?”
Or... against all the odds, Simon finds himself in Ryland Grace's universe. This is how they find home.

Ryland Grace hated dreaming. He dreamt he would become a successful scientist, that failed. He dreamt of being able to live a quiet life as a school teacher, that also failed. Even his actual dreams seemed to mock him, showing him glimpses of his life back on earth. Places he'd never see again. Things he'd never do again. People he'd never talk to again. That's what you assume, anyway, until one of those people gets yanked out of a submarine full of blood... in the middle of space.
Or; Ryland stumbles across and rescues a man who was also left to die alone in space, and they try their very hardest to live a peaceful little life together on Erid... but old, swiss-cheesed memories and strange, inhuman mutations keep getting in the way.

Summary
Ryland Grace had never intended to leave humanity behind and sometimes he missed it so desperately he clawed at the walls of the Hail Mary like a caged animal.
Simon came from a world so ravaged he wasn't even sure what humanity was other than a writhing, screaming thing that refused to die and he yearned for a goddamn break from the cruelty.
Three years into the journey to Erid, the SM-13 drifts into their path and Grace can't handle the idea of abandoning something human made so far from home, the last human made thing he might ever see beyond his own ship. What he and Rocky bring aboard is more than just a floating tin can. The half dead man almost certainly means Grace will starve before he makes it to Erid, but it's a sacrifice he's willing to make if it means spending even a fraction of his remaining time with another human. Rocky knows there's something wrong with their new companion more than skin deep, even if Grace seemed to be willfully ignoring it in favor of enjoying human company again. If it keeps Grace happy, Rocky will do whatever it takes to keep this new secret.

A different take on Bloodymarytober Day 1: Celestial
Simon was not used to seeing people with so many freckles, the lack of sun exposure greatly contributed to that fact, and on Eden there really wasn’t a reason to expose your skin other than your face and hands with how cold it could get in the station. Seeing Grace so carefree with his back exposed to the fake light to bring back the natural faded spots on his back made Simon want to run his fingers over Grace’s skin. To Simon it was as if Grace had his very own star map on his back; and there’s nothing he craved more than to trace constellations with gentle touches. He could spend hours memorizing and worshipping each pattern and mark every beach day but he doesn’t; because he knows it's not his place. They’re not together like that as much as he would want to; despite sharing a home and a bed and waking up with legs tangled and arms holding each other. Physical contact was a necessity, Simon understood that… so, as much as he yearns to be able to kiss Grace every morning, or pull his body closer every night and run his fingers down Grace’s back he won't do it.

If Simon deluded himself, if he let himself slip into that living, breathing, gasping warmth, it felt an awful lot like he was right back in the arms of his mother. Maybe that's why death, the thing that had haunted Simon for as long as he could remember, wasn't so daunting.
Simon got one last hug from his mother before he felt his body shredding itself apart, before he felt something that was not him before but was apart of him now, reaching out and out and out until his already-ruined eardrums caught the last agonized shriek of the eel.

The man had only been thirty-nine years old when he’d passed. Next, Simon’s gaze passed over the epitaph, which read, Find someone to be brave for.
Finally, as Simon shoveled the last bit of dirt into the grave, he read the name of the man whose body would soon be studied by the scholars of Eden. It was, he decided, a name worth remembering.
Dr. Ryland Grace.
Simon has seen countless dead bodies in his time working as a resurrectionist for Eden, as it has been his job to retrieve corpses for their scholars to study. Usually the corpses don't stand up on their own, though. They also aren't usually so hungry.
