Summary

Charles gave BJ’s shoulder what he guessed might be intended as a reassuring squeeze, but it did the opposite-BJ was startled and alarmed. Why was Charles trying to reassure him? He instinctively leaned away from the hand while trying not to move his head, as Charles, Lieutenant Epps, and Father Mulcahy appeared to have a brief conversation. They all looked slightly troubled, especially Father Mulcahy, whose eyebrows were knit tightly together, a hand wrapped around his rosary. ... God, this was infuriating, BJ thought, wishing he could understand what they were saying.

With a huff and a roll of his eyes, Hawkeye finally allows himself to flop on the bed, wriggle toward the pillows like a worm, then fumble to find the handle of his nightstand drawer so he can pull it open. "Oh no, Hawkeye, whatever shall we do? No, yeah, absolutely we can attack everything head-on all by ourself. Who the hell needs to inconvenience anyone anyway?" His fingers graze buttery smooth leather. As he lifts out the black collar, customized to fit the exact dimensions of his neck, his heart skips a beat. Hawkeye holds it above him and turns it this way and that to watch the soft lighting in his bedroom shine across its lovely surface, ending with a wink of a glimmer on the metal buckle. He sucks in a deep breath. "Let's see, what's more important? Taking it on alone and burning a hole in the rug? Or hearing all about how pretty we are, huh?"
A shiver tickles along his scalp. A memory of both slim, elegant fingers and thick but agile ones sliding through his hair. The gentlest scratches possible.
"A little vanity never hurt anybody," he drawls.

Something wormed uncomfortably in the pit of Margaret’s stomach. She knew that her nurses congregated without her—stayed up late giggling, gossiping, painting each other's nails, and doing each other's hair (she could always tell. A new issue of Vogue or a style guide would circulate throughout the camp, and half the girls would walk around with Liz Taylor’s curl pattern. Just like clockwork). Sprawled out over each other's bunks with their shirts tied up around their navels, their hair loose around their shoulders.

The dismissal is clear. "Oh, no, not at all, General, don't let me interrupt you."
"Donna," Charles says under his breath, hand lifting toward her.
"It's been lovely speaking with you, Charles." And when she meets his gaze, she really lets herself look at him this time, not just his lovely eyes and the softness of his true smile, but a really good look. She sees the intelligence, the wit, even the edge of loneliness that he has no need to feel if he enjoys charming women like he attempted to woo her tonight. Though their lives diverge here, he'll be an interesting memory for a quieter time. "Have a wonderful evening."
As she pulls away, Donna's mind oddly still lingers on him, on the flutter of excitement that stirred the air once he realized their common interest. And though she's quite practiced in pushing away thoughts of missed connections, his smile accompanies her all the same.

From the moment that Donna crosses paths with Charles, she's certain she knows his game. But as she finds herself surprised by him over and over again, a long-neglected piece of her heart begins to bloom.
