Here she was, four years later, leaning against her windowsill to fully inhale his scent floating in with the evening breeze. She loved it - dark and smoky and alluring. Like the first sip of scotch after puffing an enchanted cigarillo. She felt her mouth water as his scent thickened in the air, signaling that he was near. Likely standing just across the street in the alcove he favored. He loved to lurk there every so often, looking up at her through her bedroom window. Watching. Always watching. Never coming any closer.
Well, it was certainly time to change that.
Smiling smugly to herself, she sat down on her bed to lay back against the pillows and begin reeling in her most deftly-set lure.

1 year after the Battle of Hogwarts, the Ministry is faced with a problem.
Both sides of the war took devastating losses and the number of marriages and magical pregnancies are the lowest they’ve ever been. Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt is left with no other option than to institute a marriage law. A law thats sole purpose is to pair the most compatible unions in order to rebuild the British Wizarding World.
Hermione is paired with her first love, Draco Malfoy, who had been betrothed to Astoria Greengrass per Voldemort’s orders during the war.
With Voldemort gone and an archaic law bringing them back to each other, this should be easy.

"The greenhouse door screamed in protest as it was shoved open and suddenly there was a tall figure in black Death Eater robes with his wand pointed at her, a purple spell whizzing past her head as she ducked down.
She willed the shadows closer, concealing herself further.
“Incarcerous!”
Hermione’s right hand shot out in a practiced move that was activated by the rune on her right arm that curved the spell back at the Death Eater, at twice the speed with which it was cast. Rope manifested, binding the wizard and pulling taught, sending him towards the ground with a grunt.
Before he hit the ground, she’d swished her wand and calmly whispered, “Levicorpus.”
The whispered jinx sent the bound body of the Death Eater careening through the roof and cleared her escape route. She was already in motion as she’d cast it.
“Tenebris Revelare”
The words were growled from behind her, followed in quick succession by a blue spell that fizzled harmlessly when it hit her.
Another tall masked figure emerged from the darkness at the other end of the greenhouse"

Summary
It’s 2008 and Draco Malfoy is a secret assassin. It's legitimate - he gets paid for it, and some higher ups in the Ministry (probably?) know he’s out there… killing people. He’s quite good, but that tracks with his dubious accounting of rights and wrongs and his penchant for self-preservation. During his downtime he does a great job of acting like a pureblood in penance... mostly by drinking and shagging his way into oblivion.
This double life helps to numb Draco to the constant feelings of shame and guilt from his formative years in which he was an utter cunt- but everything is upended when his team (assassins can have coworkers, alright?) dies in action and he does not. Suspended and forced to go to therapy, Draco is adrift.
When Hermione Granger re-enters the fray, their hateful relationship that was once fraught with swotty bickering (erm, and the occasional slur) is suddenly tense in a very different way.
How will these two come together? How often will Theo say something terribly charming? Do we hate Ron or is Ron just, meh? Oh, and what’s going on with that one murderous witch who’s out to kill them all (forgot to mention that part…)?
