But when he discovers they hired another exorcist to accompany him in the insulting presumption that he could possibly fail, the job becomes significantly more complicated.
Well. It isn’t like he hasn’t worked with Natori before. Things may have deteriorated between them from how they used to be, but they are still capable of bare minimum cooperation, hidden behind a thin lacquer of sugar-coated barbs and provocation. In the end, this shouldn’t be any different.
...shouldn’t it?

As much as he doesn’t like to admit it, Atsushi sometimes thinks that his fights with Akutagawa are kind of… fun.
And maybe that’s not the right word, maybe something like “entertaining” or “amusing” fits better, because the number of times he’s gotten his leg cut off by the older man’s ability is far too many, in his opinion. But even their mindless arguments during mission downtime and petty bickering when they see each other on the streets of the city by chance have become something familiar to him, less aggravating over time and more something to pass the time with.
But a few months ago, something changed with him, and Atsushi can’t quite figure out what it is.
Akutagawa and Atsushi have always had somewhat of an unconventional relationship, but Atsushi finds himself missing their conversations when Akutagawa starts acting strange. He's determined to figure out what's going on and return everything back to normal—no matter what it takes to do so.

He was completely fine, and the ability of this villain of the week seems to be on the fritz other than the ‘teleport them to library of truth pocket dimension’ part which was especially nice because they were told that whatever was written in the books would immediately become true—and all the books talked about how nice it was having a weretiger as a boyfriend, which was the truth.
So, in total, the villain’s reality-altering was broken and this should be a cakewalk.

Summary
He knew that he should have been upset, the disease was incredibly damaging and in most cases terminal, but Akutagawa felt nothing but a strange sense of accomplishment when looking at it. There was something so reassuring about it. Akutagawa didn’t think himself capable of loving others, not beyond the protectiveness he felt for Gin and the familiarity he shared with Chuuya. But this was physical proof that he could; the love he felt for Atsushi had taken root deep in his chest, intertwining itself with Akutagawa’s very being.
If I cant have him, he thought, at least I have this.
