Silence.
And finally, Zuko does something: He laughs.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” he chokes out. “Of course she’s going to die on the same day as me. I just — can’t have a single damned thing to myself, can I?” What a sick, twisted joke of the universe. Zuko laughs and laughs and can’t get himself to stop laughing, until his chest hurts and he feels his ribs scraping ever so slightly against each other, and it’s so uncomfortable to be in his own skin.
Of course they’re going to die.
or: zuko and azula aren’t friends and never will be, because they both die at the end.

He wishes there was some other way to prove loyalty, some other way to prove love.
He wishes he could have said something true, but he has always, always feared being burned.

Aka, my take on how the Chit Sang would reveal what Zuko stood for to the Gaang + Hakoda, and how it would be seen. I did this all while listening to "Things We Lost In The Fire" by Bastille on repeat. (I had to, at some point, make an obligatory Gaang finds out about the scar with added spice!)

“Sokka seems almost startled and a bit guilty, before he relaxes again and says, his voice very soft, “Oh. Yeah, it’s gorgeous.” He sighs, before shaking his head and turning to face Zuko with a lopsided smile.
The ex-prince feels his chest seize and wonders briefly if he’s having a heart attack. What the hell was that? he thinks, a little panicked. Abruptly, he realizes that Sokka is talking and blurts out, “I’m sorry, I- I zoned out. What were you saying?”
Sokka laughs a little. “I was just asking how it is teaching Aang how to breath,” he explains.
Zuko’s snort of laughter is more than a little forced but, hey, in his defense, he’s still a bit worried that he’s about to keel over from a heart attack.”
