He got into NYU, is happy with his identity, and is surrounded by people who love him, including his boyfriend from his hometown who moved in with him. Mike Wheeler, on the other hand, is miserable. Mike's girlfriend died, he didn't go to college, and he realised he doesn't like girls. And to top it all off, he's been in no contact with his best friend for almost two full years. No letters, no calls, nothing. Only snippets of what he hears from other people. That is, until one day Lucas and Max force Mike out of his misery to go to a halloween party. From a chance encounter, Mike "bumps" into Will. And will things change for the better or worst?

What would happen if Will Byers was never found during the events of Stranger Things season 1? How would he survive the upside down? How would the people of Hawkins react?
Will breathed in a ragged breath. Black smoke poured from his mouth as he tore himself free from the wall. He collapsed forward, coughing and gasping on the cold, moist floor.
His heart pounded in his ears as he shakily scrambled to his feet. Eyes darting around the abyss, he started to run. And he ran, and ran, and ran.
His feet pounded on the ground when suddenly he found himself on a familiar path. Finally, something familiar. Will sprinted through the woods, as a feeling of hope filtered its way through the panic. He was getting there, he was gonna be safe, it was finally within reach.
Castle Byers.
The pain in his chest and legs screamed at him to rest, but he couldn't risk stopping. He pushed himself further, calves aching with each step. Suddenly, a loud screech echoed through the air from somewhere up ahead.

Summary
Will hasn't spoken specifically to Mike in over a year. After the Byers moved to California that one year, and Will hardly talked to Mike anymore, they promised each other that they’d always stay in contact, even after high school graduation. That’s what a party is supposed to do, right?
Will followed in Jonathan’s footsteps and enrolled at NYU, just a short drive away from Joyce and Hopper in Montauk, who are soon to be married. After a year of going to college, his life’s been pretty great. He’s been taking fun (overbearing) art classes, has a fun (tiring) job, and an amazing (confusing) boyfriend. What more could he ask for?
It isn’t until his second year at college when things take a turn. Mike is back, enrolling at NYU for who knows what. It’s been so long since Will has even seen Mike that he doesn’t even know what to say to him, but one thing is for certain, Mike is different. He’s been acting really weird recently, specifically around Will, and Will is determined to find out why.
A year in college in which Will figures out Mike’s feelings towards him were a little more intense than he once remembered, all while trying to “balance” his “amazing” relationship.

He's stopped hoping for someone to come save him, but he'll be damned if he doesn't find a way out of this hell himself. He hasn't survived this long just to die now.
In other words, if Joyce and Hopper hadn't been able to rescue Will at the end of season 1, what would've happened? Who would Will have become?
