What if Shane never got injured?
What if Ilya decided to finally take a step back?
What if the 5th best player of MLH was suddenly spotted hanging out hockey's golden boy Shane Hollander?

Ilya is aware of Sebastian Hawthorne like he's aware of all the top 10 players of the league. Though he knows no one can come close to him and Hollander, he still likes to keep an eye out for them.
Hawthorne, or as his teammates call him, Hawk, joined the Toronto Guardians during his Rookie season and has been there for the past six seasons. He's the assistant captain.
“It's like he’s already seen the play unfold five seconds ahead,” Shane had once complained to Ilya over the phone after a particularly nasty loss against the Guardians some seasons back. Ilya then got the impression that Shane didn't like him either.
So imagine his surprise when the picture of Hollander and Hawk shows up on his feed: laughing and practically having the time of their lives while leaving a high-end bakery.

Summary
Keeping secrets is hard, keeping a marriage a secret? Even harder. Ilya and Shane want to lead the Centaurs to the playoffs and win the cup, so they are trying to keep their quicky city hall marriage a secret from everybody, for now. They do an okay job of that. Actually not good, probably bad.

Summary
“I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”
It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.
“I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”
It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,
“Very funny joke.”
(or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)

Shane’s breath hitches and he looks up, big, brown orbs settling on the person behind the camera. There’s a blush crawling across his freckles, his voice unsteady as he answers.
“I wanted to celebrate with Lily, but she isn’t here.”
The video ends shortly after, and the internet collectively loses its mind. Within minutes #FindLily is trending across all social media platforms, women from across the globe begging Shane to dump her ass.
OR on the night that Shane wins the cup for a second year in a row, the internet learns of Lily and goes absolutely nuts.

Shane loves in a quiet way. Never too loud, too vocal. He loves Ilya for so many reasons. He loves Ilya, not in grand promises but in little things. Even his possessiveness is never too overwhelming. He loves away from the prying eyes of others, of media and of people. He loves Ilya just the way Ilya is supposed to be loved.

"You could stay with me until you get better," Shane says so quickly that Ilya doesn't understand at first. He has to close his eyes for a second and give the words time to make sense.
"I had injuries before," he starts. Shane nods. "I was alone, too."
The pained expression on Shane's face makes him bristle. He knows what this is, and he won't accept it.
"I know–"
"I am fine on my own," Ilya says firmly. He hopes that settles it, but then he can see the cogs turning in Shane's head.
"I know you are. Just– You don't have to. Be on your own."
OR: Instead of Shane, it's Ilya who gets the fractured collarbone and concussion. Also, Ilya is a terrible patient.

A quiet night apart turns into something neither of them expected when Ilya comes home different, and Shane can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong. What starts as distance and confusion quickly spirals into tension neither of them knows how to name.

Ilya has to keep his jaw from dropping at the tone of Shane’s voice. Shane Hollander, who is always incredibly polite to everyone, has just snapped at Svetlana. That’s when Ilya notices the slight glaze over his eyes, the flush that covers his cheeks and the bridge of his nose and the half empty beer glass in his hand.
“Hollander, what are you doing here?” Ilya asks, pulling his boyfriend’s eyes back to him.
“I’m at a club, Rozanov. Obviously I’m doing what you usually do at a club. Drinking and having fun.”
Ilya doesn’t know whether to be offended with Shane’s sarcastic tone or laugh because this Shane Hollander is a sight to behold. He is standing in front of him, sarcastic and bratty, with a smirk taking over his face now–proud of his answer.
or: there’s a reason that Shane Hollander shouldn’t drink alcohol, especially not in a bar in Boston with a certain Russian hockey player around.

Shane Hollander notices Ilya Rozanov and Cliff Marleu getting a bit too close on the ice. Its small things; Marleu's hand rushing to touch the small of Rozanov's back after he scores, the way they bump helmets and get just a little bit too close in each others faces. Shane always was a little jealous, but this was different. He was sure Ilya was doing it to get a rise out of him, but he couldn't give in, he had to give him a taste of his own medicine.

It is mentioned briefly that this leads to a fight and three days of Shane ignoring him. Only then does Ilya realize how devastated he would be if Shane took him up on that offer. This is one way it could have played out.

Ilya took a long drag of his cigarette, eyes still not leaving Shane.
“Maybe staring is not bad thing,” Ilya said. “Maybe I stare because you are very pretty.”
Shane floundered before he could form real words. “Well. That’s stupid.”
