Xiao's breath hitched a little, only the slightest bit. Enough to be a weakness. The voice in the back of his head supplies. Morax’s voice was cold and lifeless. His lord didn’t give him a glance, or a command to stop kneeling, but to go back to the front lines. The Adeptus dared his yellow gaze up at his lord, only to find no amber eyes staring back, which made him pause.
OR, Xiao tries to report to Morax. Morax is in a bad mood. You can imagine how that would go.

“Allow me to explain,” Aite said, voice sickly-sweet — just like the stench of overripe fruit that pervaded her hall. “I believe I know how this…mistake…was made.”
“Oh? Then explain.”
Xiao first meets Morax when he is still enslaved to his first master. He does not expect kindness, especially not when his goddess puts him forth as the culprit in the massacre of a human settlement on a contested border.
Morax, though, surprises him.
