Bucky Barnes is an excellent liar when he needs to be.
Unfortunately, Sam knows his tell.
It begins with a stolen donut, a suspicious twitch of Bucky’s jaw, and the discovery of a stray cat named Sergeant Whiskers. Soon, catching each other’s lies becomes a game. One that follows them from Louisiana breakfasts to dangerous missions and increasingly personal questions.
But when Bucky takes a devastating hit meant for Sam, the game stops being harmless.
Because Sam knows Bucky is hiding something. All he has to do is ask the one question neither of them is prepared to answer.
“Are you in love with me?”
Bucky freezes.
Sam waits for the jaw thing.
It never comes.

Summary
It's 10:34 AM on a Thursday morning when the Winter Soldier kills the GRC delegation leader in the middle of an international summit. He takes out every security agent who gets near him, maims most of the bystanders. He looks right into Sam's eyes as he raises a modified sig-sauer micro-rifle and shoots Sam directly in the middle of the star covering his chest.
When The Winter Soldier attacks an international summit and shoots Captain America, Sam Wilson is convinced Bucky Barnes had nothing to do with. He'll go to the ends of the Earth to prove it.
When Sam goes missing, Bucky runs a rescue mission, no matter what it means for his own health and safety.

It's entirely Sam's fault that Bucky's first thought on realizing he’s been captured by vampires is: well, these guys aren't part of the big three. His second thought is: if vampires have been a thing all this time and no one fucking told me, I'm going to be so pissed. What the fuck else is real? Fairies? Wolfmen? Goddamn Sasquatch??
Bucky gets kidnapped by vampires, or maybe it's a surprise family reunion instead. When Sam comes to the rescue, Bucky has to think fast to keep himself from being turned into a vampire, and to keep Sam safe in a castle full of vampires too.
So naturally he decides that they should pretend to be married. If Sam's family too, and if Bucky and Sam have a beautiful love story, Great Uncle Yakov will have to let them go, safe and unvampired, right?

Sarah hummed and smiled, but it was a thin smile. Sam narrowed his eyes at her. “What?” he asked. “What’s that look for?”
“Just wondering if there’s anything you want, just for yourself. Being Captain America’s a tough job, what’ve you got going on apart from that, what’re you doing just for Sam?”
Sam was doing plenty of things for himself, thank you very much, including but not limited to treating himself to a style makeover that had nothing to do with Bucky's own summer glow up. But as Sam and Bucky grew closer, Sam found it increasingly hard to deny that Bucky was something—someone—Sam wanted just for himself too. Even if Steve's return to their lives made Sam think that maybe Bucky wasn't Sam's to have.

Bucky watched the rain through the window of the tiny house. The last pedestrians hurried down the streets, shielding themselves from the relentless downpour with umbrellas.
He bit his lip, leaning lightly against the windowsill. A cigarette was clenched tightly between his teeth, his jaw tense enough to nearly crush it. The apartment he was staying in was small, consisting of only one bedroom, a tiny kitchen, and an equally cramped bathroom.
Unfortunately, he was currently confined to the bedroom, which held only three pieces of furniture: a desk, a dresser, and a bed.
Just one bed. And sitting on it was a muscular Black man with a laptop resting on his knees.
*Fucking awesome,* Bucky thought, taking another drag as he followed his companion's movements out of the corner of his eye, watching his brows furrow while he decrypted yet another file. As usual, his gaze lingered despite himself—on his well-defined features, his full lips, and the way his T-shirt stretched across his broad chest. At the same time, he bit down harder on the cigarette, trying to suppress the curses pressing against his lips and the tightness spreading through his chest.
