"Gilbert hadn’t expected to catch that familiar scent in the air in the palace. He’d quietly planned to visit the bookstore during what precious free time could be scrounged, ostensibly to pay a visit to the bookseller who traveled all the way to Obsidian and back in the search of rare books, and bringing special finds to court. He likely would have told Emma the truth, that her scent had clung to the books she loved so much. That he’d know her by that alone before seeing the waves of chestnut hair or the bright blue eyes that the old man had described.
He’d begged for stories about her, when the old man was younger and Gilbert was a boy. Even then, his sharp mind and keene senses had set him apart. It was a pity, the grown prince sometimes mused. He might have had a chance at something approaching happiness if not. Though more likely, he’d already be dead. Once he’d noticed a peculiar, comforting smell about his favorite books, and then found out they had been beloved to the bookseller’s adopted daughter? It wasn’t difficult to piece together that the smell was Emma."
