“Gay?” Will scoffs.
Or: It's summer of 1990—the hottest, most grueling on record. Luckily for Mike, he's invited to stay in Montauk with Will over break. What he doesn't expect, however, is Will's sudden interest in what it's like to kiss someone, and Mike volunteers to be his test subject.
It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, okay? Plus, Mike wants to practice so he can know how to kiss the girl he totally met on their first night here.

While Whitaker made a beeline for his bathroom, Trinity took a detour to the living room to turn on the ac. Their apartment only had window units and there was no point in wasting the energy to cool an empty space for twelve hours during the day, so they only ran them while they were home.
Hopefully the stuffy room would cool down by the time they had dinner ready, Trinity felt like she was in a sauna.
And it was a Tuesday. On Tuesdays when they were both home at a reasonable hour, they always made tacos. Maybe it was cliche, but they both enjoyed the ritual of it. Trinity could admit to herself that she was looking forward to it as she headed down the hall to her room.

As far as deals go, it isn’t that complicated. Dennis doesn’t ask her about her mother, or the boxes full of gymnastics trophies, or what happened between her and Langdon, and in exchange Trinity doesn’t ask how a guy from Bumfuck Nowhere, Nebraska whose whole community was rooting for him ended up broke and homeless in near enough the other side of the country. There are medical schools in Nebraska, after all. Trinity checked.

Summary
Will could not help the question that burst from his lips, it had been ricocheting around his brain like a stray tennis ball and was simultaneously causing him the most excitement, distress and exhilaration he had felt in his entire life.
“Are you my husband?” he blurted. Mike blinked in surprise.
“What?”
Will lost his nerve slightly. He wondered if he had been horribly wrong about this, and maybe in this strange timeline he was just a friend staying over and maybe he’d made a mistake and the daughter wasn’t really his daughter and—
Will faltered. “Um, I — well, I just thought you were — I mean, you are my husband, right?”
Mike looked very alarmed. He was staring at Will as though he had grown a second head.
“Obviously…?” he said, “Are you feeling alright? Did your mom make you try her D-I-Y coffee again?”
When nineteen-year-old Will Byers wakes up to find himself in his forty-three-year-old body, he must—with no experience whatsoever—play the part of world-renowned freelance painter, father of two very troublesome teenagers, and most strangely of all: Mike Wheeler’s husband.

“Hey, Mike?” Will asked. “Why now?”
Mike was silent for a long time, so long Will thought he wasn’t going to answer at all. “I just… I don’t know. How can I move on if I don’t know for sure? I can’t stop thinking that if she is out there, if I was right, and I don’t even try to find her, then maybe I really didn’t deserve her.”
A year after graduation, Mike decides to start a search for El and asks Will to come with him. Their friendship hasn't been the same since Will came out and Eleven disappeared, so Will agrees, kicking off a complicated journey that brings them back together. Will is in college, trying to move on, and Mike is idling in Hawkins, torn between his past with El and his confusing feelings for Will. As the search brings them closer than either ever imagined, Will and Mike grapple with first loves, moving on, and growing up together.

"This okay?" Mike presses his fingers down, ever so slightly. Will inhales sharply and nods, but strangely, Mike isn't satisfied. Because of this, he says something so, so stupid—
"Can you use your words for me?"
Another sharp noise escapes Will. Mike stiffens, tugging his hands away as he mentally calculates the flight cost for a one-way trip from New York to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, until Will leans back into his hands with a soft sigh.
"Yeah," he says, softly. "Yeah, it's— it's good."
When Mike touches the back of Will’s neck, Will loses himself. Mike, obviously, decides to abuse this.

Mike knows he looks stupid, unable to control the way his eyebrows furrow and his lips curl in complete confusion. Then his roommate rolls his eyes and makes a gesture like he’s cracking a whip, complete with sound effect. His cheeks heat up, the realization suddenly dawning on him.
He thinks Mike was on the phone to his girlfriend.
He thinks Mike has a girlfriend.
He thinks that Will is Mike’s girlfriend.
Everyone at college thinks Mike has a girlfriend. There's just one problem. The 'girlfriend' in question is Will Byers. Mike's best friend. Platonic with a capital P. He's so screwed.

It’s not a suitable answer to ‘what’s wrong,’ because it’s very much what’s right about Mike— the best part of his person resides in the part of him that loves Will. Undeniable in the same way his heart pumps blood to the rest of his body, undeniable, like the simple fact that tomorrow, Mike will wake up and still love Will Byers. He hated himself for it, but it’s hard to deny the truth, especially when it's staring you in the face.

He could already hear the jokes Will was holding back from making upon his choice of words, and yet, even after being very well versed in this period of their relationship, he splayed his forehead on the desk as if to hide the redness in his cheeks from the walls. The walls that bore no support, no filter, or muteness, that let everything through with a lenient silence that oftentimes made him feel crazy. Their apartment should just be an open box with no division whatsoever, given how useless the walls were at blocking out sound. Mike could hear Will and the Guy of the Month going at it a little too clearly for Mike to ever be fully at ease past 9 PM.
“No. Leave me to die.” He mumbled to the plaster.
