Steve didn't answer right away, still staring at his hands. "Thanks, Buck."
OR
Steve didn't decide to stay in the past after returning the Infinity Stones, but something delayed his return all the same.

Summary
Samira didn’t go out.
She worked around 60 hours a week, came home and slept, or sat on her futon reading journals until the words swam and her eyes burned. JAMA. NEJM. Anything that kept her mind occupied long enough to feel useful.
She told herself that it was enough.Lately, it hadn’t been.
Her mind had developed an annoying habit of drifting, usually when she was trying to focus on something important.
A line from a paper would blur, and she’d catch herself thinking about Jack. His gravelly voice, talking her through a procedure. The way he told her she’d done well, like it wasn’t just routine praise.
It made no sense to her. She tried to frame it as admiration. But it lingered, unhelpful and intrusive, like a symptom she couldn’t quite name.
So when Trinity texted drinks? followed by far too many emojis, Samira said yes before she could overthink it.

After Leia's death, the Resistance has dwindled to nothing. Rey volunteers herself to take residence in a popular Coruscant brothel frequented by First Order officers.
Allegedly, he is a frequent patron, as well.
Rey infiltrates the brothel, auctioning her untouched body in an attempt to gain information about the First Order's whereabouts from a high-ranking officer, so the last vestiges of the Resistance might have a fighting chance at ending the war.
At least, that's the lie she tells herself.

Jack Abbot was very clearly not the kind of guy that Samira Mohan was into.
Which was fine. There was a whole laundry list of reasons that women didn’t flock to Jack Abbot. He was too short: women expected alphas to be taller. He was approaching fifty. He had a job he was completely dedicated to that did not lend itself to a normal sleeping cycle— or a normal life, for that matter. He had one factory-model leg and one titanium and carbon fiber aftermarket fix for a right-side BKA he’d undergone in Germany. He was chock-full of C-PTSD and anxiety and depression and maladaptive coping mechanisms that ten years of therapy had finally put a slight dent in. He had a wife named Maggie who’d been dead for almost seven years. And he hadn’t had sex in those seven years, apart from the handful of emergency DRIs he’d been able to help with here at the Pitt.

Robert “Bob” Reynolds lived by this during his drug addiction. Of course, he was living in hell anyway. Better dead than in hell, he’d told himself when he signed up for that drug trial in Malaysia. He was in hell. He wanted to find a way out of it, and he figured if that supposed miracle drug didn’t take his hell away, then it would probably kill him. And if, after all was done, and he was simply gone, then wasn’t the world better for it? He was a miserable addict, vengeful when high, voided when sober. He didn’t contribute to anything in society more than ambience on dark street corners.
And then he woke up.

Flashlights in the dark, streaking dim across expanses of black water, muggy air, mosquitoes. Little red eyes looking back out of the water. They’d sit and guess how big the gators were from the distance between the eyes. You’d better watch yourself out here, Bobby, his dad would say sometimes, and pretend to start to push him forward over the boardwalk with a big hand splayed on his back. And he’d laugh and laugh, like it was funny.
Bob had never thought it was funny. But he’d learned early on to laugh along.

When Bob tries out a new solution for his wellbeing, he's advised by Barnes to keep to a schedule and avoid any variables. But this means pulling away from the New Avengers (and Yelena) for a while, and even though the results are fantastic, all that pent-up need for connection and affection has to go somewhere when the adjustment period is over.
