He was with Scott and the others. He didn't even really know who these people were, which was just as well, since they obviously didn't know him, either. They just knew Stiles. They missed Stiles. And for their sake, Thomas wants to at least try to give them a little closure.
He knows how it feels to lose someone. He doesn't want to put anyone through that, even if these people call him by the wrong name or assume he's weak and vulnerable.

I'm going off the movies because the books break my heart. Basically, Thomas blames himself for what happened (no surprise there). It was his job to protect everyone. People tell him he succeeded.
But did he?“Minho, I..I….I’m…..sorry, I’m so sorry.” Thomas’ breathing starts to come under control after drinking some water.
“Woah, Thomas. What for?”
“You know what for.”
Also in this fic, Thomas is the cure, because it's just simpler that way. But, the thing is no one knows. What will everyone think of him, if they ever find out the cure to all of this devastation was lying in bed rereading a letter? The letter.
