It wasn’t the prospect of pain that frightened him. Zhenya was a hockey player: he was used to pain, even to violence. But this wasn’t like a fight on the ice—tempers boiling over, hot rage spilling out everywhere—cathartic, necessary, even if it got him sent down the tunnel. This was different. There was nothing here to push back against, no way to assert his own will. In a little while Crosby would come to him, and Zhenya would open the door and let him in. Crosby would feed from him, taking what he wanted from Zhenya’s body.
And then they would be bound.

Like he belongs. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. June doesn't seem to give the man a second thought. She merely flicks Alex on the forehead and takes back the waffle. Ellen isn't worrying, either. In fact, she's talking to him. Asking what his schedule is like. Making plans for dinner.

“What?” Alex asks, laughing in disbelief.
“Little David ran inside when we were out the back. He knows his way back to my apartment, but I go to the door and surprise, surprise, he is nowhere in sight. So I panic and then I hear a barking coming from your apartment and I come here and it seems like you have dognapped my dog,” he says it all in one breath and even David looks concerned for his owner there. The man crouches down and puts David on the floor, smoothing his fur.
Alex, doesn’t appreciate being accused of something he didn’t do and maybe it is because he’s been having a shitty day regardless, but he blows up as well.
“I am NOT a dognapper, your dog just seems to like me,” Alex protests, fuming at the audacity of this complete stranger. “Maybe you just need to look after your dog better and make sure he doesn’t run off.”
The blond gasps indignantly and covers his dog’s ears as if this conversation will potentially hurt David and Alex would find the whole thing comical if he wasn’t livid. “He was barking, so he obviously didn’t come in here willingly.”
OR
Alex finds a beagle in his apartment one day. His new neighbor accuses him of stealing his dog.

Soulmarks determine your soulmate—whoever shares your mark is the person you’re meant to be with for the rest of your life. Alex’s nails dig into the picture as he remembers the words from all those years ago, the pamphlet he’s read so often it’s etched into his mind. He turns his wrist and places his own mark next to the boy’s.
The scale mocks him in its asymmetry. Regardless of Alex’s wishes, it didn’t morph into the stages of the moon in the last five minutes.
Alex stares at the boy a few seconds longer, the bright blue eyes and sandy blonde strands so beautiful he inadvertently likens it to sunshine. His lips are curled into a secret smile and just for a moment, Alex dreams that the smile is for him, reaching across the ocean, warming the secret parts of his heart he’ll never admit he has. He allows himself another moment with the boy before he moves away, leaving the magazine on his sister’s desk.
Princes don’t fall in love with boys anyway.
Or, 5 times Alex and Henry think they don't belong together, and one time they do.

Hot Barista glances vaguely around himself, then back to Alex. He looks simultaneously surprised and uncertain, like some kind of aggressively handsome time-traveller who’s been unexpectedly yeeted into a different century. After a beat, he says – “From me?”
“Uh yeah. You’re working here, right?”
“Well... yes?”
Alex tries very hard not to sigh.
Great. Looks like he’s dealing with one of those people who are so attractive, they’ve never had the need to develop any kind of personality beyond that of a Tupperware container of room-temperature potato salad.

The next day comes around and, when they come across a village at a crossroad, Jaskier books himself a night in the inn and Geralt continues North. Jaskier doesn’t ask if they’ll see one another again. He knows, deep in his bones with a certainty far beyond his years, that the answer is yes.
It is not until he is bathing that evening that he realises why the answer is yes.
He’s so used to the occasional ink splattering on his skin that needs washing off, that he doesn’t even note the words in block cursive travelling up his thigh for what they are for a good moment.
