"How noble of you," Blue says, at a loss.
"Well – I suppose," Gansey replies. They both pause. Then, "I can pick you up now, if you want."
Blue throws herself to her feet. "Be quick."

Blue isn’t one to shy away from talking about difficult things, so she asks, “Is it fine that I touch you? We haven't talked about it.”
Adam shrugs, being such a boy about it, and doesn’t look at her. Purposefully casual, no expression of opinion. “Sure. I don't mind.”
“Do you like it?” Blue presses.
Adam levels her with a cool look. “Why?” He’s clumsily trying to make her embarrassed and back down, the jerk.
Blue is trying to be patient, but Adam is being rude on purpose so she figures it doesn’t matter that much if she gives up. “Well, if you don't like it, I'll stop.” She huffs at him.
“No, I like it. It's alright,” Adam says, perfectly smooth. He doesn’t seem to be lying, and though it’s always hard to tell with Adam Parrish, Blue believes him.

“I came after church,” Ronan says eventually. “You didn’t answer.”
“I wasn’t there,” Adam replies. “I was at work.”
Ronan squints at Adam. “Never used to work on Sunday mornings.”
Of course Ronan keeps Adam’s fucking schedule in the back of his mind. He’s odd and devoted like that. “My hours changed.”
“So tell them to change them back.” And Adam knows Ronan knows. Ronan thinks something is up and is prodding at it just to piss Adam off, circling him and backing him closer and closer to the corner. He feels heat climb up the back of his neck like an insect in the dead of summer, and tries to imagine ice water dousing him.
Adam grits his teeth. “It doesn’t work like that.” He’s fortunate that he has a job at all, he can’t afford to be particular about hours, especially with how long he spends at school, anyway. “Don’t be an ass.”
