(FULLY FINISHED NOW. FEEL FREE TO READ IN FULL AND COMMENT IF YOU HAVE ANY...WORDS?)
Zero, one, then one again, followed by two, then three – Gale counted the steps the swirls covered before ending at a larger puddle. The sequence that was the logic of the spiral ended unceremoniously at eight.
How interesting, if rather pretentious with obvious planted and intended portentousness. Shar truly was a trickster goddess to create such a mathematical pattern of Shadowheart’s blood out of some sort of spite, despite her nihilistic intent to create nothing of everything.

Summary
"He should have known his good luck was doomed to finally fuck him over. What was there but to assume the worst when a slave escaped his master, or pondered the mere concept of even partial autonomy? Was there a name for the emotion one felt when, despite all denial and proof of otherwise for so many tendays, they realised they would never truly be free?
Astarion stared blankly at the crumpled remains of his tent, canvas slashed and poles snapped in twain his thoughts blank apart from that one word. The finality of it all. The doom of his existence."

When the shadows of the Shadowlands become the least of Astarion's problems. At least he has Gale...

Summary
When Gale was kidnapped by Orin, he was unaware that he would not be rescued at all, but rather kidnapped again FROM her by Gortash. To slave away in the Steelworks Foundry. Given his own personal incentive not to fight back, this did not prevent his defiance. He was instructed not to fail at his duties or he would be punished.
Naturally Gale of Waterdeep, the former archmage and Chosen of Mystra, did not like following rules.

Summary
It started off with curiosity.
The curiosity should have killed the cat, though in Astarion's case he was already dead. He just wish he hadn't been such an idiot and listened to the man when Gale wanted him to back off. Then he might not have gotten so attached and now he was leaving "gifts" for the man like the proverbial cat. The wizard could have returned them, but he had such a need for them that it only prompted the vampire to get even closer.
Gale is DONE with him pretty much from the start, though, so Astarion had to learn a better way to interact and help this particular mortal he was absolutely not at ALL growing slightly attached to. Not even a little. Nope.

Summary

Summary
‘I never thought you’d be pleased to see me,' Astarion muses.
‘I’ve never been so pleased to see anyone in my life.’ Gale laughs shakily. Then his face crumples. He sobs.
Carefully, Astarion wraps his arms around Gale and pulls him into a hug. ‘You’re safe now,’ he murmurs. ‘I’m not going anywhere.'
Oh gods, the last thing he needs is to fall in love with this idiot.

Summary
Gale had desperately clasped Astarion's wrist, preventing him from fully wrenching away. From fleeing. And for a brief moment Astarion was ready to lash out with all of the feral fury a starving spawn had to offer.
The memory of that scorching touch was like a scar. The imprint of his lightly calloused, bare palm on Astarion's slender wrist was an invisible, white-hot brand upon his flesh. It was only Gale's wide, worried eyes and immediate surrender of Astarion's captured limb that saved him from being torn to ribbons by long-forgotten vampiric claws.
He loathed it. Touching and being touched.
People did not touch Astarion and survive.
Astarion did not touch people destined to live.
---
Astarion has a complicated relationship with physical touch. It brings up a wellspring of memories best left forgotten, and he doesn't even know if he could enjoy it anymore should he ever let anyone close enough to try... or five times Astarion sees Gale being held and has a lot of difficult feelings about it + the one time he does it himself and knows exactly how he feels about it.

Summary
A tiger cloaked in black with a sundial moving over dark eyes flicks its tail, and a fox with blood-stained teeth lifts their head, and a serpent with poison bleeding through each crack in its iridescent scales melts back into the corpse as it speaks.
"Curious," it says, a man's voice, rasped from age and still solid. Gold filigree, burial shroud. A storm bound to a raven's form spreads its wings. "What is the worth of a single mortal life?"
(Vampires are not alive. Undead is not quite dead. Astarion is normal, until he isn't.)
Or: five conversations Astarion has with Death.
