"You do not have to be Robin," Batman tells her carefully, voice uncharacteristically gentle when he addresses her. He's not mean, not usually, but there's always an air of urgency when they communicate, like there is a time limit following them (and in a way, maybe there is).
Stephanie swallows thickly, rubbing at her bruised knuckles, "You said Robin was important."
"To me," Bruce clarifies softly, and Stephanie feels her knees give weight, the fear of disappointing a mentor the only thing stopping her from crumbling to the ground again, "Robin is important to me. No matter who wears the colours. It doesn't have to be important to you."

"I can tell Alfred to turn the heating up in here," Bruce immediately says, grimacing when Dick looks almost embarrassed, eyes trained down on the rug in the middle of the room.
"No! No, not cold like that," he grumbles, hunching in on himself, "It is lonely, being the only one. I used to sleep next to mama and papa."
Bruce imagines knocking himself out with an inflatable hammer, "Oh. Right."
(Bruce stops a city from drowning, goes to the circus and becomes a toy maker — in that order.)

Andrew's eyes are blown wide and unblinking, staring in what looks like pure disbelief into the alleyway.
Gabriel follows his line of sight, frowning.
He's fully prepared to see Scarecrow himself, standing above an evil cauldron dripping with green liquid — or however it is he makes his scare drugs.
Gabriel is not at all prepared, however, to see Bruce Wayne, dressed in a perfectly pressed black suit, lying in a pool of his own blood.
"What the shit," is all Gabriel can manage to blurt out.
(Amidst Gotham's usual chaos, Bruce meets some strangers.)

It is relief that washes off of Bruce in great waves of uncertainty. Talia relishes in it all, dipping her feet into this new sea of understanding he's letting her in on. She wonders if he even realises that she knows, that deep down;
Batman is glad the Joker is dead. Batman is even more pleased that it was not him who killed the Joker.
The air between them smells like vindication.
Talia smiles to herself, "I didn't do it for you."

Summary
"I kill so others don't have to," Bruce states firmly and clearly. This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill."
Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?"
Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try."
(Jason meets a version of Bruce who has manifested his fears very differently.)

“Can I help you?” Hal asks after he catches the man staring again.
He'd been right to think the man hadn't been entirely adverse to catching Hal's attention, since he doesn't seem embarrassed at being noticed, almost like he was being the least bit inconspicuous on purpose.
“Sorry,” the stranger says, hardly apologetic at all, “You… look like someone I know.”
Hal snorts, “Must be one handsome fellow,” he jokes with a shrug, knowing being vain is only charming if it's true.
It seems to work, since the man's indifferent expression falters, the corner of his mouth twitching in amusement as he hums deeply. Maybe it's just a trick of the light, but his baby blues seem to twinkle mischievously, “Some would say so.”
(Hal meets a guy in an expensive suit who has a thing for chilli dogs.)

“Some of them,” Damian answers after a beat.
“You should bring them here,” Kitty whispers back, “Show them the sky.”

Tim can't believe what he's seeing. He knew it had been many hours since he'd slept, but really, having nightmare hallucinations about Bruce adopting another kid is a bit much.
When he finally finds his voice stuck at the back of his throat, realising this is nothing but an unfortunate reality, Tim smacks a hand over his face, "Bruce, no."
The man frowns, "It's Damian," he whispers in defence.
Tim feels his blood pressure skyrocket from that statement alone, "Like that's any better!"
