    It was a sunny day at U.A. Academy. The school felt relaxed as the final week before summer break began. Laughter echoed through the halls, and for once, everything felt almost normal. But not everyone was as relaxed as they seemed. Izuku Midoriya tried to focus during class, but his thoughts kept drifting. Something about the atmosphere felt different lately especially around Katsuki Bakugo. Their relationship was still tense, and never truly calm, no matter how much time passed. Bakugo, on the other hand, acted like nothing had changed. Loud, sharp as always. After class, small interactions between students slowly built up the anticipation for the upcoming school festival. Ideas were thrown around, plans were made, and Class 1-A began preparing together. In the middle of all this, moments between Bakugo and Midoriya became harder to ignore. Brief conversations, silent glances, and forced teamwork started to appear more often, even when neither of them wanted to admit it meant anything. And while the rest of the class focused on fun, chaos, and festival preparations, something quieter began to grow between the 2 rivals something unspoken, confusing, and impossible to fully avoid.

    With a hero suit built from years of stubborn effort and silent support, Izuku is pulled back into hero work. Between patrols, lesson plans, and the strange habit Dynamight has of showing up to sit in the back of his English classes, Izuku slowly begins to settle into a new normal.

    Until a battle goes wrong.
    Until Dynamight is pinned beneath collapsing concrete.
    Until something buried deep inside Izuku finally wakes up.

    Some quirks are inherited.
    Some are given.

    Katsuki couldn’t help but feel guilty about what he had said. And he should feel guilty. He let his emotions get the better of him and he said something unforgivable, something he didn’t mean and something he regretted saying as soon as the words left his mouth. He’d told his first and only real friend to kill himself for fucks sake.

    If Deku was serious about becoming a hero, some things needed to change. For one, he needed to learn how to fight back. Not just to Katsuki and the extras, but he needed to learn how to hold his own in a battle.

    The nerd wasn’t going to have this shit handed to him because the world felt sorry for him. If he wanted something that badly then he’d have to work his ass off for it, and if Katsuki had to be the one to tell him that then so be it.

    Or: Katsuki regrets all the things he’s said and done to Deku over the years, and in order to make up for his past actions he offers to help the nerd pass the entrance exams.

    But does he really have what it takes to become a hero despite not having a quirk?

    And why is Katsuki acting so weird all of a sudden?

    The word settled into the room with an almost physical weight: Crush. So adolescent and harmless.
    It sounded absurd in Mina’s pink bedroom, under fairy lights, with Bakugou Katsuki sinking into a beanbag like it had swallowed his spine.
    “We’re not saying it’s a bad thing.” Kirishima stepped in. “Just that maybe you don’t have to fight it like it’s a villain. You know?”
    Katsuki lifted his head then.
    “Fight what.”
    Mina tilted her head to the side and bit her lips before she spoke.
    “The fact that you look at him like you’re either about to punch him or kiss him.”

    After UA graduation, the Bakusquad are working as underpaid sidekicks and are forced into sharing a loft. Izuku is getting his teaching license nearby, he keeps showing up for reasons unknown, and absolutely does not live there. Bakugou Katsuki is not handling this very well. A Love Story.

    This work was inspired by chapter 431! I started it as a way to provide some much-needed context and clarity (cope) to the chapter as a whole. However! I have decided not only to do this, but to also elaborate on Izuku and Katsuki's relationship as adults. It's a bit of a work in-progress, but I have a general idea of the direction I want it to go. This will be told by a third-person narrator that mostly revolves around Katsuki. (Duh.) Everything will be as close to canon as possible, including characters, plotline, backstory, etc. This is my first fic, so bear with me!

    "I love you," three words that were unwilling to spill out of Midoriya's mouth. He always felt filthy near Bakugo, this ugly feeling of loss and guilt. It made him purge like it was the plague.

    He hated the idea of loving a man, and loving a man who was better than him in every way.
    It was stupid, but society narrated the story of two men who shouldn't be together, and if they were? They'd have to narrate the story of a heterosexual couple.

    And now that Izuku was quirkless?

    He was the weak one.
    he was the woman.

    And he didn't want to be inferior, he wanted to be the masculine heroic hero All Might was.

    He was the symbol of peace.

    And yet Katsuki hadn't learned the language of love, he didn't recognise the hatred and inferiority beside Midoriya as admiration. Till he learnt it, and he adored it.

    Yet he'll never be seen.
    So now they pretend, and puppet around. Like idiots, as if they cannot speak, they don't have the skill to express their fears, hopes and loves for the other.

    As they have to pretend.
    That's what the queer kids do, isn't that right? All we do is pretend.

    “Wait! Ochako!” Izuku shouted weakly.

    She called back to him from somewhere far away. “Sorry, can’t hear you!”

    Despicable. What kind of friend does that? A terrible, horrible, insufferable, unforgivable–

    “Come here,” Kacchan whispered gruffly, approaching Izuku so quickly he didn’t have time to process what was happening.

    He squeaked, “What are you doing?”

    “What does it look like I’m doing?” Izuku gasped as the blonde swiftly scooped him up off the floor and whisked him out of the bathroom.

    Kacchan murmured, “I’m taking you back to bed."

    Okay, so maybe Ochako wasn’t the worst friend in the world.

     

    Izuku slept in Kacchan's bed last night. On New Year's Eve. And something happened, but unfortunately lightweight Izuku was too drunk to remember it. In fact, he's pretty sure he's still drunk because when Kacchan won't tell him what happened, Izuku asks him to show him.

    Will this New Year's mishap lead to something more? Or are Izuku and Bakugou doomed to just stay best friends forever?
