Summary
“Sorry to rush out so soon, Dez.” Deacon’s body seemed to move on its own, resting back against her table as he inexplicably kept speaking. “It’s just, I’ve been staying at this new place right? And they have power. I mean it, working lights and appliances, only a flat rate, 100 caps a month. The problem is we’re wasters used to dark, damp catacombs and I just can’t for the life of me remember if I left the oven on. That would be fine on its own, I mean, I’m a responsible American citizen, I have insurance.” Deacon couldn’t tell if she was paying any attention. He’d lean towards ‘no’. “But… I left my new tabby kitten home alone. I know, I know, not the most responsible move. But parenthood is hard, you know? I just need a break sometimes… Either way I’ve worried myself sick. Filled that nice ceramic vase we keep in the corner to the brim with vom—”
“Hurry it up,” Dez said. So she was listening.

Charmer had a tell. A tiny thing that Deacon had never mentioned to her. It wasn’t necessarily a ‘lying’ tell, it just showed that she was nervous. But Deacon noticed her doing it. That was the beginning of his creeping, hair-raising concern.

Summary
“Sharon!” Ahzrukhal had finished helping the ghoul who had taken his attention from the smoothskin. Now he was calling to Charon from across the bar with a sly smile.
Charon’s chest tightened. He felt the gut twisting pull of the contract and hoped Ahzrukhal would have him make her leave—nothing more.
The bar quieted down, waiting to see who the bodyguard-made-bouncer would deal with this time. The girl looked at Ahzrukhal and then back to Charon. For the first time since she had walked through the door, she appeared frightened.

Summary
The Commonwealth is gone. The Institute has won.
Nora should have died with it, but instead, she followed the old railroad tracks south, haunted by the ghosts of the home she failed to save. At her side is the only person left who understands what it’s like to lose everything—Deacon, the Railroad’s last surviving liar, lone survivor of a different kind of war. Deacon has some ghosts of his own that threaten to resurface. Together, they cross a wasteland on the edge of collapse, searching for a reason to keep fighting.
But the Institute is still watching. And they want Nora.
A story of survival, reinvention, and two people finding something worth living for in the ruins of the world.
