Summary
September, 1847.
The first woman Captain James Fitzjames sees in years is brought to him in the wake of yet another fatality.
After a hunting accident leaves a seaman dead, James Fitzjames follows proper naval procedure when getting to the truth of it. In accordance with Victorian-era custom, this does not include asking the Inuit woman—dragged before them by the men for questioning—anything. And James cannot forget the look she gives him afterwards.
When the woman reveals she cannot return to her people, James makes a rash decision that binds them both. Trapped in the ice, with both his mission and his will slowly unraveling, he finds himself drawn into a strange reckoning with a woman who knows the land, the truth of his quest, and the cost of survival far better than he ever will.
(Or: Repressed Victorian subjectivity is forcibly (!!) reintroduced to humanity by an outsider who does not consent to such restrictions.)

If getting arrested for someone else's crime wasn't bad enough, Jane Irving, who she had been dating for four months now, had dumped her just a few hours earlier. They had both gotten catastrophically drunk in order to cope, and she was still feeling the buzz of that particular poor choice, ready to vomit for her third time that night, consciously suppressing a dry heave out of embarrassment for how Harriet Goodsir -- glaring daggers in her peripheral vision -- would react. Edie and her had fought, and she now felt awfully sorry for it, nearly as sorry as she felt over Jane. She had lost that stupid miniature boat headpiece she spent hours making, her wallet, and the fig bar she kept for hunger emergencies like this one in the fire. One of the heels of her brand new, absolutely adorable satin Valentino pumps somehow snapped off. Her phone was dead, which meant she wouldn't even know if Jane was still trying to reach her.
If this wasn't rock bottom for one Georgiana Henrietta Hodgson...
