Just as he was about to make his decision and ask for the cheapest beer available, he felt someone put their arm around his shoulders. Turning his head slightly to the left, Simon looked at the man standing next to him.
"Hard time makin' a choice?"
Simon opened and closed his mouth multiple times without producing any sound, which caused the Scotsman to let out a deep laugh that Simon could feel shaking his entire body.
"I've— I've never been to a bar before," he finally managed to stutter, his cheeks feeling so warm he knew his face must have betrayed every single one of his thoughts that suddenly had nothing to do with ordering alcohol.

When Ghost and Soap began their courting, Ghost hadn't thought much of it. Many couples these days were very loose and carefree when it came to relationship traditions. He had thought Soap would be much of the same.
Only, Soap had shyly told him that with the way he had been raised, pre-bonding sex wasn't allowed, their first time should be when they sealed their mating bond, and that couples should wait at least two years before they bonded.
That was fine. Ghost was a patient man. He could wait.
Both of them were disciplined enough to wait.

Ghost glances up sharply at the sound of the door, eyes narrowing briefly before recognition softens his expression. "Couldn't sleep either, huh?" He mutters, voice rough from disuse.
"No," Johnny rasps, hoarse and stripped bare, not bothering to put on his usual playful facade. He moves slowly toward a chair opposite Ghost, sinking down into it with a weary sigh. "Haven't slept properly in days."
Ghost nods slowly, taking a long, contemplative drag of his cigarette. "Nightmares?" he asks quietly, smoke curling from his lips as he exhales.
Johnny hesitates, gaze fixed on the worn tabletop. "Aye," he admits finally. "You?"
Ghost pauses, eyes distant for a brief moment before he replies softly, "Always."
"How do you cope?" Johnny asks quietly, frighteningly honest, too exhausted to keep the question at bay.

There’s a teddy in Soap’s bed; a beaten-up, old brown bear. Well-loved, if the state of the fur is any indication. Ghost lets out a choked laugh, mostly at his own expense. He wishes he was there, suddenly, wishes he was by Johnny’s side as he walked through the doorway and realised that his childhood room was waiting for him like a time capsule. Wishes he got to see the embarrassed scrunch of his face, the way the tips of his ears would flush red.
Soap has a whole second life, outside of the SAS. He’s got a mother, and a poorly-decorated bedroom, and a bear. All Ghost has is a flat that will be the same it is today as it will be the day he dies, like he was never even here at all.

Ghost has been working at an animal shelter that rescued problem dogs for a while now. For the most part, it's a pretty great way to spend his retirement, especially with Riley by his side. Of course, there's always things that make life suck arse.
Like the guy with all the scars casing the shelter from across the street. Ghost hasn't taken a life in a long time, but if the bastard was the kind of piece of shit he suspected he was, he'd do what he had to. And if he was wrong... Well, he'd deal with that if it came to it.

An alternate first meeting, where Ghost and Soap meet each other in the field under infinitely worse circumstances than either of them would have liked:
Ghost wakes up in a pit under a building with a bomb attached to him, certain he's going to die. Soap, an EOD tech amongst his other specialties, is the only person available to at least try to save him. It should be fraught, and tense, and miserable all around, and it is; a whole lot of Ghost slowly losing his mind while Soap does everything he can to save his life. But it would probably be easier if Ghost wasn't a stress-flirter, and if Soap wasn't the kind of endlessly competent that he loved, and if, by virtue of their situation, they didn't keep ripping open each other's wounds and then patching each other back up again after.
