Summary
Humans are largely an undocumented species in the greater universe. All who had ever tried to reach the outer cosmos had not survived; all but one, that is.
X, also known as Xisuma, found himself on the other side of the universe with nothing but what he had on him when he was taken. He decided that this was a prime opportunity to screw around and find out. One by one, Xisuma assembled the crew of the Hermitcraft, a ragtag team of misfit aliens from all across the cosmos. He showed them kindness and compassion, different than anything they ever knew, and they became stronger together.
This is how the crew of The Hermitcraft came to be.

Summary
What started out as a joke quickly turned into something more devastating.
None of the Hermits were excited for this exchange program, in honesty it sounded stupid to force them out of their well comforted school and home. Scar's friends weren't exactly happy he was the one picked for their social experiment either.
It ended up leading to a rabbit hole of a missing person's case, a teacher's suspicious death, ghosts, and a boy who adamantly refuses to where his uniform.
Scar didn't expect to uncover a cold case when he changed schools.
Or: A combination of the YHS lore where the hermits are able to intervene and help Grian.

That was a long time, wasn't it? And sure, there were a lot of things that had changed between then and now. Inside and out. So when things finally crack like spiderweb lines over thin ice, it's an odd sort of impact. Like getting the wind knocked out of you. Like collapsing, like crying, like scratched-out words and waves on the beach receding and lava in veins and tears prickling hot needles, and, and, and...
How could you draw a comparison to this?
There was simply nothing here. Nothing was allowed to be here anymore. Haven't you been paying attention? Grian knew. Pearl knew. Their Masters, friends, whatever you wanted to call them, tried to understand even if they had only grappled with it, never connected with it. Maybe the avians hadn't truly connected either, because that was forbidden. It was all severed from both of them when they were fifteen years old.
There was nothing here. There couldn't be. Their ties were cut, the lines were drawn, and all that was left now was to be useful.{In which Grian flies, Scar cries, Pearl tries, Gem sighs, Mumbo nearly dies...and it's finally time for a reunion.}

“Yes,” Phil sighed, close to slamming his head onto the desk.
“Well, if I must clean up your messes, father dearest,” Wilbur sighed dramatically, standing up with a theatrical flair. “I suppose I can take care of your little rodent problem here.”
“Just– take care of him before the sun sets.”
“Yessir,” Wilbur mocked with a salute.
Phil rolled his eyes. “His name is Theseus. I texted you his address, but he’s in school until three. You can figure the rest out, mate.”
“Consider it done,” Wilbur grinned.
