As a half-human, half-Kryptonian, Kon is able to somewhat smell the alphas and omegas around him, even if he’s not one of them. He’s closest to a beta, but the tests show he’s not one—not anything.
He doesn’t let it get to him. If anything, it just makes Kon infinitely more curious about the humans around him and all the dynamics he can’t sense. This drives him to go visit Damian—a newly presented omega—to ask him some questions.

In his alcohol induced state, the touch feels like blazing hot fire being branded against his cool skin. Placed right between his shoulder blades, Bones’ fingers stretch out to the base of his neck, just barely grazing against his slightly overgrown hair. He doesn’t realize how cold he truly is until the touch seeps into his skin. He bites down a gasp at the change of temperature, at the intimacy, at the emotions charged into the touch.
(Or: Jim has been secretly pining for Bones for forever - through their academy years, all the way up to their posting on the Enterprise. It all comes to a head on an away mission involving a classified flower, a hover car, and some freaky alien fauna pollen.)

He had stood there, staring at Jim, until Jim called his name with a small smile and raised eyebrow. He had blushed once again, and said something about a medical checkup, before storming right off the bridge again, completely forgetting what he had originally went to do. He hadn’t seen Jim at all, really, since then, and he was vaguely glad for it; Leonard was sure he’d be caught staring again, and no good could come of that.

Jim took several steps forward, his lethargy evaporating in an instant, eyes huge and blue. “You were asked to hold a lecture, right? The kind that’ll be broadcast back to Starfleet?”
“Who told you?”
“M’Benga,” Jim said smugly. That traitor.
“Damnit. Yeah, I’ve been asked,” he admitted reluctantly. “Didn’t say I’d do it.”
“They asked you to include a practical demonstration, didn’t they?”
“Jim…” Leonard straightened fully and regarded Jim with badly disguised confusion. Jim was normally a little loopy after heat, but this was another level. “Tell me you’re not about to try to wriggle your way into this. This isn’t the scouts, Jim. You can’t volunteer to participate in a lecture.”
“They asked you to do a lab demonstration, right? You can’t do it without an omega. I’ll be the patient.”

When Jim and Bones are thrown together on the shuttle, there's something at first sight. It takes longer for them to get past each other's defenses.
Jim couldn’t help but grind his hips against Bones at that, couldn’t hold back the sharp intake of breath that betrayed just how badly he wanted this. Still, it was Bones who’d had the long shift, Bones who was too tired to eat when he’d gotten home that night. “You’re the one who needs taking care of, though,” Jim protested feebly.
“Here’s a little secret about me,” Bones said, kissing his way down Jim’s neck. “My favorite way to relax? Taking care of someone else. Preferably,” he said, sucking at a bit of skin that Jim knew would just barely be covered by his cadet uniform, “someone who makes noises as pretty as that.”
Jim stopped trying to swallow the whine that was escaping him, letting Bones hear the effect he was having.

"Bones," Jim's panicked voice fills the space. "Bones, please. I wouldn't wake you if it wasn't an emergency."
Jim's interpretation of an emergency can be different from his own—one dire emergency that Jim woke him up for had been asking if he had any laundry detergent, when Jim knew damn well that there's sample single-use detergents down at the communal laundry room. Leonard is grumpy when he wakes up on his own volition even on a good day, nevermind being woken up unexpectedly. Any of Jim's versions of an emergency doesn't make him any less cross.
That's when it hits him. Jim's scent is strong, stronger than it's ever been in the two and a half years they've known each other. Sharp citrus permeates his nostrils and hits his brain—his alpha instincts and needs flare up—heat. Jim's in heat.
Leonard helps Jim get through a surprise heat. Neither of them expected how their friendship would change after that.
