Summary
“I’m sorry,” Zuko said, so quiet his voice was almost lost beneath the crashing waves. “Please don’t burn me again, Father. I’ll be quiet. I won’t question you again. Please.”
His voice cracked on the last word. And in that moment, all Sokka could see was the age of the scar warping one half of his face. When they met, Zuko was sixteen and the scar was just as old as it was now, and that meant—that meant—

Summary
“I’m going to go practice some firebending forms,” Zuko says stiffly, running a hand through the tangles in his hair. “Tell Aang to join me if he wants to once he wakes up.” Gold eyes dart up to where Aang had strung up a makeshift hammock and was still sleeping soundly, snoring like a buffalo yak.
“Alright,” Sokka says, watching as he walks out without another word, evidently having reverted back into his usual brooding self. “Have fun!” He calls after Zuko loudly, which he means to be sarcastic, but comes out painfully, embarrassingly sincere. His face burns, and as soon as Zuko passes out of sight into the the temple, Katara turns to him, leveling him with a Look.
“You like him.” She says, and it’s not a question.

Summary
Zuko’s arms are locked tight around himself, shaking, breath snagging against Sokka’s chest. “Why are you being so nice to me?” he whispers, voice all frayed edges.
Sokka just kisses the corner of his mouth, soft like forgiveness. “Because I love you. And I like being nice to you.”
or, Zuko doesn’t know how to be touched without flinching, doesn’t know what to do with gentleness that asks for nothing back. But Sokka holds him like something sacred—cleans him up, keeps him warm, kisses the trembling out of his spine. Love doesn’t have to be earned here. Not anymore.
