Lestat gestured toward the theater behind him as he smiled bitterly at Louis and Claudia. “Come with me to Europe.”
Lestat looked at his fledglings, resigned. How he wanted to shout at them.
Why didn’t you listen?Louis, how could you bring her here?
Claudia, is it everything you hoped it would be? Didn’t I tell you they were vicious, what they would do to you?
Why would you willingly put yourselves at their mercy? How did you not see them for what they are, a society of monsters?
But the answers were already there, in their eyes, as they looked back at him filled with a righteous rage of their own.
They were there because he had failed them, had broken them first. But then, he already knew that.
And so, Lestat could only say, “And he was hers again.”

Summary
There’s a panic within him that Lestat hasn’t felt for years when the sunlight streams in a perfect circle containing Claudia and Louis’s fledgling, a panic he hasn’t felt since the night he felt tainted blood rise to his throat and the love of his life drag a knife across it. It’s the panic of an ending unexpected, of a rug yanked from beneath him. He made his choice. He chose Louis. He knew if it came down to using his abilities to sway the audience, he only had the power for one. It wasn’t even something he had to think about. It was Louis. It was always going to be Louis.

Louis and Lestat divorced eight years ago and, in that time, have been for the lack of a better word ignoring each other, while also co-parenting Claudia. When she graduates high school though, she has the idea of going on a "family holiday" to celebrate this milestone. Louis hates the idea but can't say no to his daughter. But he is adamant that he will spend the whole trip spending as little time in Lestat's presence as humanly possible. No complicated feelings and no dredged-up memories. Right?

The second surprise is the reason why.
