It comes out like an observational statement, like they’re back in Freshman year biology marking down the anatomy of the frog they dissected. Looks like spaghetti, Steve had said while they stared down at the guts in front of them, and even now Tommy can’t eat spaghetti without thinking of it. “You know, believe it or not, Eddie doesn’t treat people the way you do. He wouldn’t even think to.”
Tommy scoffs, does an eye roll of his own. “Yeah, I’m sure he’s real sweet to people before he gouges their eyes out."

Sometimes Steve gets these crazy dreams. He wakes up from them shivering, hand reaching for something under his bed that doesn’t exist. The plots of them mostly fade after a minute, so he’s left with unsettling images that haunt him whenever he closes his eyes: vines, pulsing like a muscle; caustic spores stuck in the back of his throat; a creature’s mouth unfolding like a toothy flower.

Summary
Vecna is dead and the gates are closed, any remnant of the Upside Down left in Hawkins are faint. Steve is struggling- he's not what he was in high school, he's not what his father wants and he has nightmares every night. As Dustin, Will, Mike, Lucas, El and Max begin to be able to fend for themselves and lean more towards Eddie Munson for mentorship, Steve finds himself jealous and purposeless. Without monsters to hit with a baseball bat, he's not sure where he fits in the new, normal world. He starts spending more time with Eddie Munson and is surprised at how well he gets along with him, despite their obvious differences. Meanwhile, he tries his best to be there for Robin, who is struggling with keeping her identity a secret.
This is shaping up to be a really really slow burn, so if you want to skip to the pining/crushing start reading at Chapter 6: Co-Parenting in the Modern Age
Seriously, I really tried to keep Steve' s characterization from the canon while adding a lot of ptsd and angst. I really hope you like this, I've had a good time writing it. I don't have a beta reader so if you spot anything wrong, please let me know.

Eddie had never been normal. Not by the current definition of it at least. That was fine with him, though. Why try to be something he wasn't? Why force himself to conform, when he'd never be the right kind of guy anyways?
Steve Harrington was that guy. Rich, popular, good with the ladies, and a total douche. At least that's what Eddie had assumed about him. Turns out that he'd been wrong. About everything, the world he was living in, the rules of physics, the existence of magic and on top of that, Steve Harrington's character.
Because Steve's apparently a total badass, and an amazing babysitter, and a total lunatic. Who else would have such a disregard for his own safety? Who else would be completely fine with the idea of sacrificing himself? And who else would truly believe that nobody would really care if he died?
Or: Eddie has a crush on Steve and while he gets to know him he realizes how fucked up the last few years have been for Steve and how protecting a bunch of kids has seriously deteriorated his sense of self-preservation. Angst and fluff ensue. Including: Steve realising that he's not straight, Eddie yearning, and someone finally putting Steve first!

Set after Vecna's demise (and written before Season 4 Vol.2 is released), Hawkins seems eager to move on, and eager to leave Eddie Munson behind. But when he gets a job at Family Video, Eddie discovers that with the help of some unlikely friendships, he can move on as well. And maybe, just maybe, he can be happy too.
