I love this so, so much. I love how the author handled Jim and Spock's attempts at communication; that it wasn't just Jim teaching Spock, but Spock teaching Jim, and them growing closer all the while, even though they have a limited vocabulary between them. And then Spock lands in France and ask for Jim by name--perfect. All the hanging out together in hotel rooms and the cuddling and kissing is so sweet and joyful. It added years to my life.

I love this a whole lot. The ways Spock is constantly aware of how Humans communicate using differences in tone and non-verbal cues, and the concern that he might be missing key information, or failing to demonstrate appropriate cues while trying to express himself, really shows how isolated he feels, and how difficult communication can be, even if you are, technically, speaking the same language. I felt so sad for him in the first chapter, lonely and misunderstood, but it sets up what wonderful company Jim is in contrast, how easy it is for Spock to be around him and not have to worry about making mistakes because Jim is generous and patient. As is Uhura, and even Bones in his own way. It was so satisfying to see Spock finding people who liked him and were willing to answer his difficult or uncomfortable questions and just let him be Spock.
Jim and Spock's relationship is sweet, and well negotiated at every step, and Spock's pon farr was gentle and lovely--their minds communicating their thoughts and feelings so well. And while it's sad--for me--that Jim was struggling and wanted the bond removed afterwards, it was a mature decision freely made, and it wasn't the end of them. They just did their communicating out loud until Jim was ready for that kind of exposure again, and the epilogue shows he did eventually get there.

This is fun, and sweet, and I like that they were pining gently for each other while the wedding approached, but weren't publicly pretending to be in love for appearances. Joke's on them; they were already publicly in love. -

This is so good. Pike's voice is perfect, teasing and wry and long-suffering, mostly from James T. Kirk. Pike, Kirk, and Spock (with a lot of help from the Vulcans, their friends, and another Spock) save Vulcan (and Earth, and most of Starfleet) through communication, science, cooperation, logic, and really the smallest amount of action/adventure possible considering the circumstances. This is a fic about thinking things through, and things are thought through. To explain it all, the author takes some inspiration from TOS that's so true to the show it feels like canon and then does an expert job of considering loose ends and possible repercussions from all the universe-altering shenanigans. A fantastic work.

They were in unknown places that were changing every day, new hotels and new staff and new languages and it would have been too easy to get caught up, to get caught.
