Summary
Growing up, the concept of acting had always been a part of Zhongli’s life even as a young boy. When his parents were on business trips, he was usually at home and watching whatever movies his parents left behind in their studies. Typically, they were romantic films - black and white, filled with foreign words that he, who learned several languages before he turned five, could not understand. But he enjoyed them and it was all that mattered.
When he was eighteen, his parents introduced him to a young woman named Guizhong.

Zhongli is a mess and Guizhong is his extroverted best friend.

Many have flocked to Liyue to try their hand at conquering Rex Lapis’ Path of Indomitable Jade, rumoured to be relentless in its challenge but bountiful in its reward. Unsurprisingly, Ajax’s one track mind honed in on the word challenge and ran all the way to Celestia with it.
No one told him it was a bygone tradition that vied for the emperor’s hand in marriage, not until much later, when Liyue was already decked to the nines in preparation for the coronation of the emperor’s beloved consort– an Ajax-shaped consort.
(In which a bored Childe thinks he’s scaling up mountains to fight adepti and gain bountiful gifts for his nation and all that jazz, but he actually ends up wooing one of them and fighting favour from the rest and-- uh, wait, what do you mean the eccentric rock enthusiast is the emperor--)

His death created a rift between Zhongli and their son Haibao; rift which still showed no sign of mending despite the two centuries that went by since. Close to giving up, an eroded Zhongli grieves his failure aloud at Childe's tombstone; unaware of his son's eavesdropping.(Or, Zhongli angst in front of Childe's tomb because I was inspired by this Twitter post in which their son kinda trampled on his feelings on his birthday and my mind conjured up this scene of Zhongli talking to Childe (not literally) through the stone about everything that went wrong to let it off his chest without knowing that his son had been here all along + they have a heart-to-heart cuz I'm not a monster.)

Someone was shaking him. His head was lolling backwards and forwards, and the soreness of his neck was the first thing he felt as he slowly surfaced from deep sleep.
Ajax grumbled. He could still feel a throbbing headache after all the ceremonies and celebrations of yesterday. Traditions be damned. Newlyweds deserved to rest up after a chaotic wedding, especially if one of the parties was an Archon and the other a Harbinger.
"Let me sleep. Leave me alone…"
"But Lord Ambassador! The audience with the Geo Archon is in an hour!"
The Geo Archon? Right, Zhongli and he were meant to meet the Qixing today. Was that the issue?
"Uhhhh, tell Ningguang and the Qixing to wait…"
"Ambassador… " The unfamiliar voice quivered a little. "I’m sorry, but who is this 'Ningguang' and 'the Qixing'?"
Huh?
Ajax groggily opened his eyes, expecting to see his own bedroom. Instead, he was slouched in an uncomfortable position on an ornate Liyuen chair. There was a young man standing close by, dressed from head to toe in the white ceremonial outfit of the Snezhnayan army, looking at him in pure horror.
Seriously, was this divine punishment for daring to bind an Archon to a mere mortal?
