Dr. Ratio is trapped in an ever-looping dream where he has garnered the sacred gaze of Nous, following the triumphant launch of his anti-planetary weapon—and has been inducted as the latest member of the Genius Society.
He hates it.
He wants to blow his brains out with a gun to escape the dream.
But he can't.
The reason: he meets the Past and Future(?) Aventurines, little Kakavasha and the more outspoken, unfiltered gambler who Ratio only see glimpses of whenever the Aventurine of the waking world is too stressed and mentally weak to hide his own inner demons. Ratio decides to stay in the dream for these two, intending to heal them, and perhaps in the process, mend the man fragmented by these neglected aspects of his psyche.
However, Ratio eventually discovers that the person most in need of healing is, in fact, himself.

Aventurine makes it out of the abyss - and into a different world. Things are different here - simpler. There are no Aeons, no intergalactic factions and corporations, no Paths and Blessings. He is not naïve enough to assume that there is no cruelty and discrimination here - for there always is - but for the most part, everything is peaceful.
Here, Aventurine's priorities are getting people's coffee orders right. Fairly straight forward, if you ask him.
Except for the bit where he is surrounded by too many familiar faces, and they remind him of a place he can no longer return to. That's okay. People come and go, and so will they.
Except for the bit where they come and go and come back.
AKA. Aventurine gets dropped into a coffee-shop AU with all the memories from before. He's handling things until he's not handling things. That's okay, because he still has friends (and Dr Ratio) in this world. He just doesn't know it yet.

“Yeah, well.” Aventurine laughed briefly, helplessly, as the look in Ratio’s eyes shifted towards one of growing comprehension— and maybe even a bit of flabbergasted awe. “Even I have my limits, I guess. Don’t, ah… read too much into it.” As if that would keep Ratio from immediately formulating whatever theories he pleased.
Am I truly so precious to you? He could read the question in Ratio’s face. His bafflement. It was warranted, whatever questions Ratio might have of him. But he didn’t really want to talk right now.
Moaning, on the other hand… now that was on the table.

Ratio flinched softly; everyone else was chatting, not really looking at them – but Ratio knew that if he made any lewd noise, he was done for. Bleeding suns begged him, pleaded with desperation, though Aventurine only tilted his hand and turned the plug’s vibrations up by another notch.
Ratio shook his head subtly, warning him – he's at his breaking point, had been for the past half an hour.
Aventurine ignored it and mouthed ‘come’, and Ratio’s entire body convulsed, curling into himself, a muffled whimper making it past his hand.

“I'm trying very hard not to rip you to shreds, doctor.” His voice was grainy and desperate, eyes widening as he felt the heart beneath his palm speed up, thumping loudly. Not from fear, as he expected, but- arousal?
Ratio was blushing, staring at him with blown pupils, and the world tilted on its axis.
What the fuck.
Aventurine swallowed, leaning closer. He regarded Ratio with narrow eyes. “You wish to be used… as a distraction?”
Ratio searches for Aventurine and finds him lying motionless on the grand stage. His first attempt at helping the creature practically writhing in agony is more or less successful — he finds himself entranced and intrigued by his form, making a choice which derails his entire relationship with the (infuriatingly attractive) gambler indefinitely.
(Or: Ratio indulges in his horny fantasies and gets fucked into oblivion by Boss!Aventurine)

Love after pain feels like impending betrayal. It feels like standing on the other side of a bridge, torch in hand, ready to light the ropes.
Love after pain feels like being the most unworthy, underserving, unlovable individual that the universe has to offer.
But how lucky he is, perhaps, to have a man as stubborn and persistent as Veritas.
Or; Aventurine has no idea how to love, or how to be loved. As he waits for the other shoe to drop, he is left with two options - let Veritas in properly, or cut him off forever.

Aventurine smirked. A familiar, hungry glint returned to dull eyes, and then he was on his neck, sucking marks into skin. Warm and wet was his tongue, gliding over his pulse, thumping loud and quick, teeth scratching over flesh just to tease.
From IPC-mandated therapy to strapping Ratio to a period simulator, returning to Pier Point is filled with surprises.
Now that they're officially together, Ratio grows even more curious and eager — be it simple affection or leather-bound lust, he's glad that they can offer one another respite from their missions. Aventurine, on the other hand, is determined to face the fragments of himself he'd been running from for so long.
Working with a Galaxy Ranger to finally put Schneider in the ground won't be without consequence, though he's ready for that gamble.
