Their eyes snapped to him in unison, startled and intense. Hollander croaked, "What?"
"There's over sixteen hundred guys in the MLH and AHL," he reminded them, because it had felt improbable to him when he first heard until he remembered the sheer size of the hockey world. "There's — well, we don't know how many of us there are, but there's at least seventeen of us that know each other. Plus you two. We watch out for each other."
His eyes enormous, Hollander asked, "There's, what? A secret underground gay hockey network?"
Scott shrugged. "Yeah, basically."

But Hollander’s brow furrowed, not in anger but in confusion. “Ah, um, sorry,” Hollander said. “Merci. My English is bad. Worse… than you. Maybe slower?” And he leaned in, like that would help him understand.
Ilya’s eyebrows rose, and his smile widened.
Or, Ilya Rozanov grew up in Russia. Shane Hollander was raised in France. When they first meet, neither of them can speak English very well. Somehow, it’s easier to understand each other when words aren’t getting in the way.

It's 2014. Hayden loves his life. He's got a wonderful wife, two twin girls, and the job of his dreams - one where he spends his free time playing hockey and hanging out with his best friend in the world. Shane could hear the crowd, loud as always in their home barn. It felt electric tonight. He didn't usually let the emotions of the occasion affect him, but after 22 years in the MLH, having accomplished everything he could do as a professional, tonight’s send-off was too much to push all the way down into that small compartment where he could hide all he felt.
But Ilya–Shane felt physical pain in his chest every time he allowed himself to think his name. Their careers still forever tied together until Ilya’s retirement a few years ago. In the quietest of times, Shane could admit he shouldn’t have felt lonely at the top because Ilya was always right there with him. Sometimes he took solace in that, sometimes it brought pain so blinding he couldn’t breathe.
